Best places to snowmobile in the US

I am planning on moving in the next couple months...

Any suggestions for where to go that provides mountain riding and has steady jobs available? Looking mostly into railroad careers, and there are a lot of openings in Montana and Colorado.. How does the riding there compair to SW Washington where I live now?

I would disagree with Gillette, kind of isolated, not real fond of the town and the closest mountains are the Bighorns, and IMO its at the bottom of the list as far as riding places go in MT, WY, and CO.... but that would probably be an ideal place if working with the rail road. There is awesome riding in more places than you could probably ever dream of riding from the southern to the northern borders of Colorado, same goes for the western sides of both Wyoming and Montana, but not sure what there are for opportunities in these areas in your field.

I just went through this but didn't have the railroad issue to figure in. Im in the auto repair industry and that allows you to work any place in the country. To make good money you just need a bigger city for customers and parts.

I wanted to be in western WY, eastern ID, OR southwest MT.

Which RR you looking at?

Grand junction, CO
Salt Lake City, UT
Denver, CO
Ogden, UT
Pocatella, ID

Larger city options on UPRR, all within decent drives to riding.
Really depends what youre looking to do, and if youll be subject to on-call etc.

Thanks for the input. Most of the areas I'm looking at are around Billings MT or even a little more east. Is there any riding out that-a-way? Or should I hold off and see what comes up closer?

Cooke city is about 3 hours from billings, also plenty if riding in the bozeman area.

WHITEFISH! For sure. Awesome riding areas, and a ton of them within probably 2 hours, probably some of the best snow in the country. Cool town too.

We made a trip up there around Christmas this year, stayed in whitefish and rode 3 different areas over a 4 day period, and it may have become one of my favorite areas to ride (have ridden all over Wyoming, Montana and Colorado). We rode Lost Johnny (15 min from town), Red Meadow Lake/Olney (20 min from town), and Seeley Lake (2 hours). All are awesome areas, and I know there's a ton more places to ride from in that area. Like I said it is a cool town, really nice, and its right there at the base of the mountains, feels like a mountain town. And there are lots of towns nearby, Columbia Falls is right there and Kalispell is a good size town and only about 20 minutes away. Greybull is more isolated isn't as nice of a town (from what I remember, drove through real late earlier this year), and the riding is definitely not as good, It would probably be about an hour drive to where you ride in the Bighorns, you could go 2-3 hours and be in Togwotee, which is definitely a better area than the bighorns. For me it would be an easy choice- Whitefish. That being said I don't know which place is offering a better job, nor do I know what it costs to live in either place.

Need a roommate lol? I have been thinking about moving out west as well. Taking a year off and figuring out where I want to go and what I want to do before college. Might as well go to a place where i can ride right? People have told me to check out Ogden ut, mcall id, and Bozeman. I'm not really sure about the whole railroad situation t those places though. Whitefish sounds like a sweet place too, lots of riding real close and a pretty nice town! That would defiantly be a place worth checking out, I'm looking into it as well!

Whatever you do don't come to Whitefish or anywhere in the Flathead Valley. We are full. Also the terrain and snow sucks.

:D

There is no best place . Get your job and go to were the snow falls and enjoy are sport were ever you are !

Don't waste your time with whitefish, it's just over run by people from California that stay in there homes for 2 weeks a year. My wife and I have lots of family born and raised in that area and that can't wait to leave. Pretty sad really. Why not Alaska? I ve been all over Colorado, Wyoming and Montana and they don't even come close to AK. Big snow year in those places is 400 inches, that's considered the worst winter in 30 years here in AK.

I grew up in Greybull riding the Big Horns. Less than an hour trailer pull. Lots of good riding up there. Fantastic hunting and fishing. Billings is 2 hours away if you need shopping.

You get into the interior states like CO and WY and you will forget all about WA snowmobiling.

my 2 cents

French Creek / Seven Fools just west of Laramie Wy . great place to ride and college town if you must go , train goes in town also , I moved seven years ago from Iowa and its been good , also has all vendors for sleds and parts , good sized town for all sorts but not too big still has that cowboy charm . They call them the Snowies for a reason ! Google Snowy Range!:face-icon-small-coo

If you want to work for the railroad and could live in Alaska. Seward is the place to be if you can afford it. You can ride from your back door and it has some of the best terrain in the state.

Wiz is right, the snowies are awesome. I also lived in Laramie for better than 15 years. If I was 20 again and could get a job in laramie it would be a slam dunk! The big horns are great, but Greybull is a sleepy little town. Laramie is a college town with something going on 24/7, and the Snowies are better. I even bet my old friend ski wiz will show you around.

Montana Rail Link has sections from Clark Fork,ID to Billings,MT going through some of the best riding in the state. They will be doing a lot of hiring in the next 5 years as approximately 20% of the workforce is about to retire. What department are you interested in? Engineering, operations, signaling?
