Gotta pass this on - I read a post last year on shoptalkforums.com and will pass it on now that I know it works

"The April/May 2007 edition of Machinist's Workshop did a test of penetrating oils where they measured the force required to loosen rusty test devices. Buy the issue if you want to see how they did the test. The results reported were interesting. The lower the number of pounds the better. Mighty interesting results for simple acetone and tranny fluid!

Penetrating oil . Average load .. Price per fluid ounce
None ................. 516 pounds .
WD-40 .............. 238 pounds .. $0.25
PB Blaster ......... 214 pounds .. $0.35
Liquid Wrench ... 127 pounds .. $0.21
Kano Kroil ........ 106 pounds .. $0.75
ATF-Acetone mix.. 53 pounds .. $0.10

The ATF-Acetone mix was a 50/50 mix (1 to 1 ratio)."

I have used the acetone-ATF mix and it is amazing. The stuff really works. Always have some mixed up in the garage now.

Do you just mix it up and keep it in a spray bottle or something? I'm a farmer and could use something to loosen bolts that cost less than Kroil. We go through that stuff by the case.

I've always used atf and diesel fuel, creaps into rust real well. I would have thought the actone would have evaporated rather quickly.

I have some in a spray bottle and some in a baby food jar that I use an eye dropper with.

The acetone is really light, it basically caries the trans fluid into smaller places, and it cuts deep. Trans fluids have a heavy amount of detergents in them.
I'll take used trans fluid and use on rusty stuff, or filter it and run some in the gas tank on cars and diesels to cut carbon build up.
Thinner and atf works really good for carb cleaner also,

running acetone through a spray bottle will most likely ruin the spray bottle, it dries out the seals

acetone definitely dries fast. When we use chemicals in our labs to insure that the test tubes are 100% dry we put acetone in them and blow some air over it the stuff evaporates very fast.

I keep some in a sealed can (old marvel mystery oil can) and then use a small oil squirter can to get it where I need it.
