There arere so many options out there, what has everyone found to work the best? Let's assume that you don't have access to your sled, so no tampons in the gas tank.

My friend made some good ones for taking on canoeing trips to the boundary waters and they work pretty good.

Use the bottom of egg cartons, stuff with lint from your dryer, then drip melted wax all over to seal. Once you burn thru the wax, the thing will burn slowly for quite some time. Gotta have the right kindeling though as with any fire.

Petroleum jelly works good too but is harder to keep a steady flame compared to the egg carton trick.

I have the typical lighter and matches. But I also carry (2or3) road flares. You can get them at most auto parts stores. They will burn big and hot for 5 minutes or so. They will start just about anything.

I carry firestarter sticks that have match ends & a striker w/them. I carry them in a waterproof container in my backpack. Most stores that have a camping section carry them.

I carry two road flares in my backpack with me at all times. Very little weight and if I can't start a fire with a flare, I'm in big trouble. Also as mentioned above a small ziplock full of dryer lint works well.

I've got a baggie of dryer lint, lighter, working on the egg carton thing now a few cottonballs with vasilene, some fire sticks from the local army surplus store, 2 packs of waterproof matches and a pack of firecrackers that can be used to make noise for help of take out the gun powder to help make fire sounds like a lot but really doesnt take up that much space and fire will be second in importance only to water so.................

never thought of the dryer lint idea.... will be loading up a bag before next trip..

I personally like the magnesum strikers.. I have had to start a couple different fires with them while sledding.. get super hot and will work if they get wet..

I use Fritos corn chips. Just put a little bag of those somewhere on you along with a lighter. They burn hot enough and long enough to get a bigger fire going. Plus if you need to you can eat them.

Cheap and easy to come by, lightweight, compact, etc:

Burn hot, 15mins of intense heat, good for signalling as well:

Carry a few of each on both sled and pack.
I would use a Bic lighter. Then cheap'os only work half the time.
