Best engine from 08-10??

I've been on an 04 rev for a few years but recently got two 2011 600 RMKs for work and I'm kind of in love with them. I haven't ridden everything out there by a long shot but I'm kind of digging the ability to drag my shoulder on hardpack with the 600s at 10 mph:D I just can't do that on my sled.

I've been reading a bit about the poo 800s and it seems like piston tolerances have been isolated as the cause of all the grenading and such when the dragons came on the scene. Seems like 'THE FIX' spacer and pistons make a lot of sense and I'd have no problem doing that, just have to factor that into a purchase price.

So I'm pretty sold on the IQ (or pro if I can find one in my price range) chassis but I'm not familiar enough with the engines. I want reliable before powerful and sketchy....... I've noticed the RMKs I'm driving for work are incredible around the low to midrange throttle but do lack a bit on the acceleration compared to my 800 H.O. rev when it's time to really get on it. I could see doing a big bore kit with one of those 600s.

I don't know a thing about the 700 engines from this era. What are the problems? What are the fixes? The only 700 engine I've had from polaris was an 05, first year IQ and that sled had so many other issues, I can't even form an opinion on the motor alone from the short time I had it. Plus the newer 700s are different beast anyway right? Educate me on the later 700s out there.

My riding is typically a lot of boondocking and riding tandem.......as in two riders, one on each running board hauling *** uphill trying not to fall off. That's for backcountry skiing (yep, I'm one of those). That's most of my interest in hillclimbing......getting two people up to a good ski spot. In that respect, I've kind of gotten used to skidoo's version of an 800 and not sure I want to lose too much of that power. But I could handle losing a little bit for a better, more maneuverable sled which I'm convinced the polaris sleds are. Or is it not even an issue and I should just deal with an 800 and the FIX kit? I like to have my stuff dialed and reliable and don't mind taking a few extra steps to do this.

So school me :D. Am I off base? On track? Thanks guys!

The 07 and newer 700's on the RAW chassis are a completely different animal from your 05 755 IQ. They are basically the same block as the 600's but with more power and grunt...not the same grunt as a 800, but much more dependable! Do a search on the 07 and newer 700 and you will find that they were one of the best engines Polaris ever produced.

Right on man, exactly what I'm looking for. I keep reading things along the lines of "the old polaris 700's" with plenty of reverence but I can't tell if that means OLD like my buddy's 03 RMK that's still killing it or the newer gen like I'm interested in. ;). I do seem to remember that 755 mess being long forgotten at this point.
Judging by your sig, I think you have some of the answers I'm after!

Thanks!

Do your self a huge favor, go with the 700's nice round separate cylinders, my wifes 700 dragon ....flawless, we call it the timex sled, pipe, can, head and ur at 140hp. The 800 motor has way more issues than just the piston deal.

My brother has a 700 in the raw IQ chassis and absolutely loves it. My brother in law also had an 09 700 RMK that had a Silber Turbo on it and that thing ran awesome! These newer 700's are hard to beat, run good, hardly any issues and good power.

I would either pick a 600 with a big bore kit (660-685) or a 700. The 800's are not worth the time and or work.

My .02

Kind of what I'm thinking. I had the aforementioned 600s out today in some slushy slop. I'm pretty sure now that I'd definitely want a little more juice for my personal ride......... Thanks a bunch for the info guys.

600 vs 700

I liked the power of the 700, it had great power. It is almost as good as the 800. The hook up was nice, it had more track than my 600 and it keeps going on the climb. I lost some power on top compared to the 8 but not much. The 600 was a nice ride, better on gas but not by very much. 1 gallon per day = $3-$4, 30 rides per year is $120, how much are the extra ponies worth? The 600 felt lighter, that might have been the year I do not recall weights but I am a big guy and could throw around a new cat for most of the day if I had to. I had both for one season, wife rode the 6, and would take the 700 on every ride I took, Some days the 600 stayed in the garage.

and I will add a 700 + 7 psi boost will stomp a stock 800 into the ground and (lol) live to tell the tale,,,,,:wave:

Find an '09 or '10 700 RMK. I bought a used (rental) sled last fall, my first Polaris. It had almost 4K on it. The only problem I've had is when I pulled the EVs out to clean them, the PTO side nut was barely holding the valve and the mag side spring has rusted through. Other than those two insignificant issues, it has been an add oil & gas and go sled. I have 4500+ on it now. It's getting rebuilt this summer which will include SLP's performance edition porting package.

I've also dropped roughly 24lbs from it w/the mods I've done and will drop even more this summer when the Mtn. Tamer goes in.

The Pro chassis may be awesome, but I'd rather keep my 700 and spend my money on mods.

Good to know. What was the last year they made a 700 dragon? Polaris took down their archive models off their website. After my quick stint with the 755 version RMK I owned, I'm a little weary of those non-rebuildable ryde shocks. Those things were garbage. Maybe they've gotten better though?

It wouldn't keep me from getting the rmk, but if can start out with better suspension I might as well. I've only found one D7 for sale locally but it looks a little beat.

I believe it was 07 or 08. The 09 and 10 were just RMKs. They came with the base model Ryde shocks. I've upraded my 09 to Float2 shocks and the rear will get the Float2 shocks when I install the Mtn. Tamer. Oh, the only way to get both front & rear skid Float2 shocks is with the use of the Mtn. Tamer suspension, otherwise you can uprade to Fox shocks by buying the Carl's custom Fox rear shock kit or the Zero Pro shock kit from Carl's Cycle.

Correct, the 07s and 08s were the newer RAW sleds available with Dragon trim.

A couple minor corrections, the 2005 700 was still the EDGE chassis machine, it became the 755 in '06 and shared the long stroke 900 block for that year only. The only 2005 sleds in the IQ chassis were the 900s, everything else was the older style.

You're correct. It was a 2006 model year. Definitely IQ style, but definitely complete crap. ;) 99% of the weight of that sled was on the skis, with almost nothing on the track.

So yeah you can imagine the mental leap I had to undergo to actually start looking at polaris again :D

700 oh yeah

i have an 08 700 dragon 163. bought it off the dealer last summer with 1000 km on it (killer deal). i put on a bd turbo with the mini intercooler. except for a rusted, and broken (mag side) ev spring and a blown bellows, the thing is awsome. i run 8lbs boost on pump. without a doubt the best sled i have ever owned
