belt removal for ungraded belt

so i used the threaded "L" wrench and put it in the threaded hole and twisted it so i could get the original belt off and to put the new belt on. i then unscrewed the "L" wrench back out and im not sure what that piece of metal is called where you use the "L" wrench, (maybe the primary) but my question is, is that big piece of metal is now loose or i should say that center bolt right next to where you put the "L" wrench is look and the piece of metal moves back and forth. so how do you tighten that back up or will it do it by itself? also is there anything else that needs to be done after putting the upgraded belt on (any torqueing?)

thanks all for your help

The sheave??? Try turning the whole secondary a few roatations and it should be good. It wont sit right until you get the belt out of the center and even around the outside.

I think that the looseness you are seeing is the "float" that the secondary clutch has. It is normal to slide back and forth on the jackshaft about an 1/8" or so.

i dont know what it is called. but i will try your suggestions and see if that does it. But there should be no torque or anything else like that right?

thanks

No torque for belt removal. just the L wrench, only thing you need to worry about is never try to spread it right after reversing and never force it. It should spread pretty easy, and may rock back and forth as you do.

i believe i found out what they call it. in the book they call it the "team drive clutch". the center bolt on the team drive clutch seems like it is loose about 1/8" so the team drive clutch moves back and forth. Is that supposed to be like that? the sled is practically brand new with 170miles.

alright thanks. it did tighen bck up. it seemed being new the spring behind the team clutch didnt retract back out but it did end but doing so a few minutes ago.

thanks

the secondary clutch SHOULD float on the jackshaft about 1/4"...this is to help the clutches align since the motor cannot be adjusted to set clutch alignment..

if yuo can get your secondary apart..get some derlin washer on each side of the spring, and dump the stock helix..and get a 66/44.46 or similar...

I've seen those things strip out before so be careful. I've never used one to spread the driven clutch personally, it's a little harder but can be done.

so after putting the new belt on i headed up north this weekend to go ride. well the new belt is making a whinning/screeching noise. does anybody know what that could be from? any hellps or ideas would be great.

thanks

I quoted these, cause I had given you the answer already.

The new belt is wider and is making it a tighter fit, that's why it's squealing. Look at you secondary, see the small nut with the allen screw in it? Loosen the bolt carefully, now screw in the allen a little bituntil the squealing stops. This forces the sheaves wider to compensate for the wider belt. Now while holding the allen stationary, retighten the nut.

is your primary shimmed for the new belt...if not, it will squel cause the shims are too tight and its dragging the belt..get it fixed stat..

and set your belt deflection to 1 1/4" and the squealing will stop..

you HAVE to float the secondary...1/4" or you will have alignment issues..

if your sled feels like it wants to go on its own then, or creeps forward try this.
simple easy answer,
your old belt was streched out from normal useage, and your (team drive clutch) aka your driven or secondary clutch, was adjusted for it. since you put a new belt on it is not streched out yet, and is tighter which makes it rub on the drive clutch( the spinning one). to loosen your belt you have to make it sit farther down in the secondary by adjusting the nut and screw as mentioned above.

yea it seemed like the squealing came and went... wasnt constant. but i just got back into town from riding for the weekend and i will open it up and see what can be done and then do some test runs. i will keep you guys updated.

thanks for the ideas
