Belt Clearance

Purchased a new 800 Axys RMK and put on Indy Specialty weights, which require adjusting the belt to sheave clearance. Before tearing down I was around .068 using the new weights. I’m down to the bottoming shim and can still fit a .03+ feeler in there.

What am I missing? Is the bottoming shim too large?

Merry Christmas.

You can take the step shim out. You must start a new stack with a .050” min. bottom shim.
Sounds like you need about a .090-.092” stack.
Hopefully you marked your clutch before you dismantled it. The cover, moveable, and stationary must line up when you torque the spider down. The spider can be located in any of the towers to achieve this. Your belt to sheave can range from .015-.030” max on a new belt. Maybe these will help you.
You can purchase Arbor shims (1.25x1.75) in multiple thickness, .008” on up to help shim your spider to the correct setting.679E2FA3-A6A7-4C2B-AF1A-D244C00E2F2A.jpegC6F859B2-EE96-43BC-8531-B069A41A06B0.jpeg

The information you posted was very helpful! First thing I did was mark everything with permanent marker.

Just to make sure I understand, I can run without the stepped shim (washer) and replace it with a .05 minimum first shim? Wouldn’t that cause the shim to move around?

Thanks for the help.

You don’t have to use the step shim. I’ve had factory setups come in without them also.
As you spin the spider down lift up on the moveable. It will center the shim stack.

Just replaced my primary with a new one, and did not have the step ring on it from factory. It came with a clearance of 0.047", had (2) 0.052 shims & 0.034.
Removed 0.034" shim and now have 0.015 ish clearance on new belt. But I tried indexing the sheaves but could not get them line up as I figured I shouldn't move the spider off the tower 'X's. This info above would have been nice to have last week lol.
Question now is do I pull it apart again ?
