Beer Fridge

So my wife got me a beer fridge for our first anniversayr(even stocked it:D) and it's out in the garage like all good beer fridges are. My problem is, in teh book it says not to leave the fridge in an area with temps below 55! My garage isn't heated so it will get dwon to 30 or so in the winter(lowest i had last year was maybe 20).

I know dudes keep the fridge in the cabins and grages all the time....so is the book full of chit? I don't really wanna wreck a new fridge in a few months, but I really don't wanna move it into the house.

you guys seeing the same type of temps I am?

Like I said, I know many peopel who leave the fridge in their cabins all winter with no insulation...all they do is unplug and open the door. And they work every spring.

It gets colder here and we leave our cabin unheated all winter. Fridge works fine.

^^^ Won't hurt the fridge, but your beer would freeze. Once thawed beer tastes strange, IMO.

I had it explained to me by an appliance tech, that newer 'fridges , to gain efficiency balance compressor run time against ambient room temp.
55* seems to be a figure that mfgr's use.

Below 55, the fridge "thinks" its cold enough inside it, even though obviously it isn't. ( Dunno if that made sense. )
So if your garage is say, 30*, the compressor won't run, and it has no ability to warm contents above freezing.

Eventually everything in the fridge will cool to the garage temp, and potentially freeze.

Had a friend who put a newer fridge w/ freezer in his unheated garage. With the temps in the garage about +30*F , the icecream in the freezer melted. Same reason as above.

hell it sounds like i will be fine...I don't care if the compressor takes the winter off. I had pop freeze last year, but not beer.

So I gather that my beer will be fine if kept in the fridge all winter...or I could be lazy and put it on the floor right outside the door.

My beer fridge died a few years ago after just two years in a non heated garage. When we bought our new fridge the sales person told us they don't make the fridges like they used to and they aren't made for cold temps. Our garage is now heated :)

Just remember ,young fellow :face-icon-small-win if those cans freeze solid, and they could, the liquid will expand and split the can. You will have one helluva mess to clean up.

O yea. Many years ago my mother bought several cases of soda, and left it in her car on a very cold night. They exploded all over the interior of the car...

Me old beer fridge...
Survived a tornado in a trailer park, 5 moves, and 21 winters in my garage.
They say if it ever takes a growler and needs replacement that I would not like the new style. Reading this thread I know why now.
Heck, it still supports all my stickers fine to date...

so, lemme get this straight, you heated your garage just so you can have a refrigerator for your beer....

that's kinda like puttin a condom on a soft pecker before you go out for the night...

X...I have small fridge in my uninsulated/no heat garage . No problems in the last 4 years. It gets dam cold here in the winter. Don't sweat it..and get the beer in there.

I think I will just unplug it when we start dipping into the low 50s at night and call it good.
