bearing problem

my 04 polaris switchback 700 started to break the little square drive keys for the spedometer, i put one in and it broke within a mile and went to put another one in but cant get the broken piece out of the key hole any help on getting that one out would be helpful, and i heard once those keys start breaking it means that the bearing is getting bad not sure how big of a job or spendy it would be to do, one guy said the bearing looked good so i dno if hurts to run it or not and advice would be appreciated. thanks

Get a sharp, pointing knife and dig in there to get the piece out. I've also had luck with twisting a little grabber screw in there and snagging it.

A lot of times the speedo cable gets sticking and that causes the key thing to break.

If you disconnect the cable from both ends, the inner drive cable will pull out of the speedo head end. It has a collar on it so it will need to feed back in on the speedo end.

I pull mine occassionally and clean it by wiping it clean, may use some brake cleaner on it. Once it is clean, I use a Syl-glide (silicone grease) to lube it up lightly as I feed the cable back in. Once it is in and not connected, check to make sure it spins freely. You can put it in a drill and spin it to see if it makes racket at speed.

Re-attach the ends and call it good for a while.

You could try a good hook and pick set. I have always been able to get out the fragments of the key. If Polaris didnt have such a crappy design, this wouldnt be an issue. I cant tell you how many of these bearings I have replace in my RMKs, XCs and everything else!!! It is crazy!!!!!!!!! Especially when you HAVE to buy the bearing from Polaris... Sorry I am ranting Get a hook and pick set. Or try a narrow magnet.

Well, if you are suspect of the bearing, then you better look into it. The Edge chassis is known for chewing that bearing up, its cause of water getting into the bearing.

It's one of those things, if you are worried about it at all, change it. They aren't too bad, just 3 bolts that hold the speedo drive on, and underneath it is the bearing.

Yea, it's a $33 bearing, but if it goes, and you are a long ways off the road or trail, what it might cost you to get it back home or other parts it might tear up doing so.

Bearing in the speedometer or bearing at the front drive sprocket axle? Is sounds like you need an entirely different speedometer, that you can snap up on EBAY for about $40 used. Of course the mileage will be different than what you have now. All other polaris parts are listed by parts number on the internet at Carl's Cycle Sales.
