I got one, you put the shovel handle and probe in the compartments in the top storage zippered area. The shovel goes in the lower main zippered area. Go to youtube and search for BCA Float18 and you'll see a video that shows you. Hope this helps.
We tested some prototypes last season, and I added an external shovel pouch to the back. I took apart another old pack and used the shovel pouch (I heated up a 3/16" drill bit w/a propane torch and burned holes through both layers and used stainless pop-rivets and fender washers...worked great).
I dont like my shovel inside my pack for a couple of reasons:
1. I keep my survival gear and extra goggles/gloves in my pack, and dont like getting snow on everything when I use my shovel.
2. I like my shovel to be easy/fast to access.
Love mine so far. Very easy pull system, holds just enough, and is light weight.
I carry a shovel, probe, first aid kit, emergency kit, and bottle of water.
