Bare Polaris Chassis purchase???

Does anyone here have any experience purchasing a bare dragon chassis and building it into a usable mountain sled. I understand it would mean purchasing many parts. I have a 2002 edge RMK 800, that is the engine I would use.

My fear is I would not be able to purchase used parts at the discounted prices I think I would require to get this up and running at a reasonable cost.

Anyone have one with a blown motor? (kidding)

Any experience here would be very helpful.

Thank you

I did it..

Yes it was costly.. $$$$$$$

But it is the sled i wanted... with no extra parts i had to take off... and laying around

Babbitts was the cheapest for me..

Ironicly, I just bought a (white) 2009 Dragon 155 with a blown motor for 1500.00. After market venting, bumpers and powder pro skis. I think I did ok. Great summer project.

Motor is shot (anyone need some parts?)....track needs to be replaced. I am going to install my 2002 800 big block into this beast.

Thank you for your advice however. Appreciated.

Where did you buy this if you don't mind telling? I was emailing someone about an 09 with blown motor iff craigslist and he has not gotten back to me after his first email.

I know Fabcraft in Florence MT (www.fabcraft.com) has put Cat big-bore carb motors into IQRaw chassis like this, you might see if you can get ahold of Mike there to see what they can do. I suspect going from an EFI to carb will require a few more parts to do as well - fuel pump / pickup issue.

There are usually a few iq chassis floating around here during the season. plenty of those used to have an 800 in there.:face-icon-small-fro

At the darn near give away price the d8's are selling for wouldnt it be cheaper to buy a complete sled? Even if you are goin to do a full mod sled you will atleast have parts to sell. If you are just looking for a reliable mtn. sled i have 2 09 d8's that with the fixx, pcv and upgraded shocks they are great sleds. Ive seen asking prices down close to 4k for 09 d8's. Just my 2 cents but these sleds can be made pretty reliable for not much money

My brother has a 10' dragon chassis with carbon tunnel and other parts that used to have an old style 800 motor in it. I think he wants to sell it all complete ready for a motor. Would be perfect for someone with an edge chassis and 910 or something if they just wanted to a newer style chassis.

How much?

Another Dragon nightmare---need advice

I will attempt to keep this short but feel some history might help. After several Gen-2 sleds from 550 trail to RMK 700's I was looking to move up. I visited Harts Motorsports and they had a 'show' sled that had 75 miles on it and essentially had everything a guy would like on a sled save the turbo. 2008 Dragon 800 with an arms length list of upgrades....SLP pipe, venting, high compression heads, Holtz racing suspension, Fox shocks, Powder pro skiis, coated tunnel, clutch work...etc, etc, etc....168 HP....custom mapped....you get the picture. Well a year later and only 1000 miles the engine blew. This was 3 rides after I took it in because it was overheating and was told everything was OK. So now--post catastrophic failure ---I'm left with a superb chasis set-up and handling in a sled that is essentially worhtless. Now I paid full asking price for this sled at the time and was keen on getting hooked up with a good shop--don't forget I own 5 sleds!!! Well after reading this thread and seeing all the bad voodoo written about the d8's of 08 I am at a loss as what to do. Shane wants me to move quickly and find a replacement 800 that he'll build-up (?) and install. To say I'm gun-shy on the 800 is an understatement. I can't afford 3500.00 a year for a new engine. What other engine options do I realistically have??? I've got a shelf Gen-2 700 ready to go....will that fit??? or can I find a IQ 700 and hope for some better reliability. I see someone said to contact Fabcraft and see what they have in a carbed cat motor....I'm just numb over this and genuinely need to hear from guys who've 'been there done that'. Bottom line should I rebuild in some manner or walk away.???? Thanks for letting me vent............................Phlboy

Wow, once again another simalar story. That sucks....Call Indy Dan. I suspect alot of these other guys (no insult intended) are just doing whatever is presented as fixes by polaris. Those (polaris) engineering geneses appear to be worthless when it comes to motors.

Indy Dan has a solid engineering fix and Rep.. I bought a sled from a gentleman who got 400 miles out of his dragon purchase (used).....I am purchasing a 3500.00 motor with a full 3 year warranty from Indy dan to install. He has a great thread on here, but call him. Sorry to hear about your hard earned money meaning little to Polaris.

Shane is a great guy, knows his stuff and will do you right. There is place in Ashton, ID that claims to have a fix for those 800 engine years called Performance Motor Sports. Carls Cycle in Boise may be another place to check out. Or...those pros run dang good.:face-icon-small-coo Good Luck.

Thanks for the replies---much appreciated.

Really appreciate the feedback and I'll be contacting those places. Shane is a great guy and that's what makes this even more difficult. The whole situation just plain sucks.
