Baker forecast...Another 40" before the weekend?

Holy deepchit batman........

Tuesday Night: Snow. Low around 15. Breezy, with a south wind between 21 and 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 16 to 22 inches possible.

Actually, the real question is will someone be so nieve that they think they can ride the hills with the avy danger as it is. Stay off the hills boys.
Got to thinking today about the ride to peanut. What degree angle is the slope after you cross the snow bridge and just as you parallel the railroad grade before you take a right and climb to the knob? Whats the slope angle from the knob down to the trail that you would need to ride on? You kinda have to ride in a valley between two slopes---are they stable? Will they slide? Are they wind loaded? Is there barried surphase hoar? Whats the avy report? What about recent weather trends?
If you can't answer the questions and others with complete certainty that the slopes won't slide----STAY IN THE MEADOWS LIVE TO RIDE ANOTHER DAY!

Stay safe boys

Peanut

I remember last year when Randy was grooming along the left side of peanut and it started to slip. I came down and pushed pretty hard on the groomer. He said it was serious pucker factor.

If that hill did slide and you were in the area can you say "terrain trap". It would likely push you off the trail and into the gully below or river as it is in the summer months.

Be safe guys. Many of us have training--now we need to use our heads and apply the training.

I love you to man and I hear you. I'm going up tomorrow but won't be going past the creek crossing. I'll stay in the lower creek and meadows and just have fun. It was 2 years ago when Peanut slid. If I recall correctly, it also happened to cuuptop. If that area is gonna slide....now would be the time it will.

Problem is, how will our avy danger get lowered. If we get warm weather, the top layers will get heavy and compacted but I almost guarantee the bottom 3 feet will still be like frost hoar. I honestly think we have one of the worst scenarios for a bad avy year we could possibly have.

Yep - I'm no snow scientist, but me thinks the avvy conditions that exist today will be here to stay with us for the entire year. Gonna have to keep your wits all winter to stay out of trouble.

Another note...the wind from the Christmas week storm blew from the east. That is unusual for us. There are going to be wind loaded slopes that aren't normally...

Warming spells with rain and heavy snow will temporarily increase the danger, but our weather is good that way such that lower layers will eventually bond. It is the colder areas, UT, MT, CO, basically east slopes of the mountains that have to deal with bad layers all year long.

this is mostly true as our snow pack can get much heavier than other places around the country. unfortunately our snow pack beginnings this year have created an unstable base that we rarely see here. It started out very cold and very windy and then rained, and then snowed and snowed, then its gonna get windy again and snow a bunch more. And as noted above, we got a hard blowing wind from the east in the early mix too, depositing poor quality snow on faces that are usually much more stable.

Keep your wits about you and choose where you climb wisely.
Be mindful of terrian traps in case you do get caught.
Watch for changing conditions and naturally triggered slides.
Read the avy reports EVERY time before you ride.
Double check your riding buddies are wearing their beacons AND that they are on before you leave the truck.
NEVER have your gear in your sled - ALWAYS have it on your person (backpack).
KNOW how to use your gear. PRACTICE using your gear with your buddies.
DO NOT park at the bottom of slide prone areas. We've seen too many needless deaths on account of this STUPID practice. Rest in safety.

that's enough for now.

Riding new years eve
