bad fuel pump anyone? stator?

ok first off my sled became super hard to start, then my electric start would not charge the battery I think I have multiple issues, ok I tested the fuel pump by hooking it up to a 12v battery, good 60 psi sound good, then tested amp draw and it is at 7.3 amps, from a few other post on sw I found that peps are saying it should be around 4, but looking up the same walbro replacement pump it says pump draw 6.5 amps, so mine is not to bad, question has anyone replaced the pump and accually tested the new pump for amp draw and what did the new one test out at, next problem even hooking up the pump to a battery and trying to start the sled I will have to crank and crank and once in a while it will fire up and idle I have taillights but no headlights, I have my gauges light up but as soon as I touch the throttle it dies, tps is new and in spec, new fuel filter and I check all grounds thinking stator is on its way out any help thanks this is a 12 pro 800 rmk

Yes it sounds like multiple issues! Boy, electrical issues suck. You said it was hard starting...does it delay turning over or very slowly? If so, ck your draw on battery when turning over sled. If starter draws excessive juice and cables get hot, you have a short in starter. They will create such a large draw, (because you are technically welding it at that point) the rest of the electrical system goes haywire. Disconnect battery and starter leads and retest. Ck all grounds and harnesses where contact is made with chassis. Good luck!!

Is the fuel pump noisy? I thought I had a pump going bad as it was noisy and would not supply enough fuel to go over quarter throttle. It turned out the lines in the tank were deteriorating due to ethanol. Check fuel pick ups in tank for restrictions and all lines. I did not check my pump for amperage draw. With your hard start issue you could hook a 12 v battery to the fuel pump prime plug to make sure it is getting adequate voltage to try to eliminate the fuel pump as a source of your hard start if you are suspecting stator problems.

First off... what year and model?

Fuel pump amperage draw will depend on line pressure.

7 amps sounds right... 4 amps sounds like amperage when not hooked up to fuel system (not pumping with pressure in the system)

I agree with CL... pull the tank, pull the pump/lines and check them out.

As far as charging the battery... check the circuit breaker in line to the battery... that can go bad OR the the connections can break or come loose and cause a no-charge condition.

Have you checked the condition of the battery?... is the water level topped up? Have you done a load test? (the batteries themselves can, sometimes, have a short life... especially if drained often past 50% discharge.

Check cables like CL said...

As for the stator.. the coil for 1) charging the battery and the grips/lights is separate from the one that 2) runs the ECU and engine functions...a non-charging battery/grips/lights will not affect the engine running. The MFG (gauge) also is not affected on the PRO by the battery system (unlike the Dragons).

Sounds like you may have an issue with the TSS (Throttle Safety Switch) built into the throttle block... perform the adjustment on that and see if the issue goes away.

thanks

thanks guys for all the info I will check a few things today I know it is june I just want to make shur all the problems are taken care of thanks

ok I maybe should have posted this in the turbo section as I think it might be realated, ok it is a 12 pro 800 with the 12 silber setup, it is not a electric start problem it spins over great, battery test great, it just will not start, I have 60 psi of fuel, I just started a thread in the turbo section about this but I will say it here also if I unplug my dobock controller it will not even pop, but if I have it pluged in it will start but as soon as you touch the throttle it will die. this is very frustrating thanks

Blown out reeds/low comp will make it start hard as well... Have you checked the basics yet? Throttle free play, plugs, plug caps, color of spark, condition of fuel?

Like MH said...tether also..put a 5 dollar inline spark tester on plug wire (great cheap tool to have) and see when its dropping spark.

ok i got it figued out. it was a ground wire broke off the connector. also just a thing i noticed when i checked fuel pump am draw i did it with a car battery and was pulling 7.5 amps, but when i test amps with the sled running and wire up my amp tested to fuel pump power supply i get 11 amp draw. can someone explain why it would be diffrent thanks
