MOUNT BAKER, Wash. -- One person was killed and another remains missing after five snowmobilers were swept down a slope Tuesday in an avalanche north of Mount Baker in Whatcom County.

Deputy George Ratayczak said the five snowmobilers were in the Excelsior Pass area north of the mountain Tuesday afternoon when they were caught in an avalanche about 1 p.m. and swept several hundred feet downhill.

About an hour after the slide, search and rescue crews located the body of a woman who was wearing an an avalanche beacon. One person who was buried in the snow suffered a minor leg injury, and two others were uninjured.

About 20 volunteers resumed their search Wednesday morning for the fifth snowmobiler.

Ratayczak said the snowmobilers were on a slope at about the 5,300-foot level in five to six feet of snow when the avalanche occurred.

The names of those involved have not been released.
