What has happened through the winter to the ice layer that covered the ground early in the season. Is it still there? Has it bonded to the snowpack? What is the potential for a avalanche breaking down to this level?

Go check out utahavalanchecenter.org and read through the reports. The ice layer is still there on top of the facets. Still weak where the snowpack is shallow and gaining strenght in the deep.

The Thanksgiving raincrust is still hanging in there, easy to identify, but well behaved for the time being. It could come back to bite us in the spring once water starts percolating through the pack. It'll get dicey, especially if the snowpack experiences several marginal or no overnight refreezes. Right now though we've got some other issues including weak, near surface facets and surface hoar which are buried and preserved and another raincrust from late January. Hope this helps out. Remember you can always check out the advisory page for pits and pics.
Cheers-
Craig

Thanks alot Craig, I read the reports every day. Your contributions to our safety are greatly appreciated.:beer;

Thinking about an ice layer near the ground changes the way I ride.

With the recent snow and warm temperatures it seems like this is prime time for that ice layer to pop its ugly little head out.
