Avy takes out my sister & brother in laws "cabin"

I saw that on the news, that sucks but at least no one was there. you wouldn't think that stuff would happen in WA where we get no snow

No snow?

Mike, you have to stop listening to Fordman. ;)

Sad deal. They are very fortunate that it came down when it did though and nobody was there. Very small window where it was empty...

Just a question, but if someone had been renting it when it happened and was in the cabin and was killed. Would your in-laws be held at fault for there deaths? Just wondering if the families of the deceased could sue. I know they could sue. You can sue over anything. Would they have a case?

I don't know but sure as chit some ambulance chasing p-rick would probably be all over it...

Hey isn't that area where the avy came down at Kahler the same place that a mudslide came down a couple years back and filled some homes with mud?
I wonder if they will be able to rebuild knowing that the hill could have an avy again in another big snow year????

Glad to hear no one was in that place and sorry about your fam having to deal with this now.

Yep. It is looking like the building permit never should have been issued...

It's not governments purpose to protect us from ourselves, our decisions.

It's back to the old common sense issue. Perfect example is Perkins Lane in Seattle... the hill keeps sliding, people keep building; and they want to blame the city. Yet, if the city says "no", they are denying personal property rights. Slippery slope.

Geo reports are great, along with some good engineering and strong construction practices. Without a good geo report on an area, one is relying on a "guess-timate"??? And then sometimes, it's just bad luck and a strong mother nature.

Point is, I don't think it's the issuance of a building permit where the "fault" lies.

Glad everyone is safe, very sorry it happened. Thank god for insurance.

it's a wonder, it never happened sooner

I agree. It was not my intention to assign blame. If you build at the bottom of a chute you are taking a huge risk.

Wow, 3/4 mile wide and several thousand feet long avy??????? AND, a million dollar "cabin".

The main thing is that no one was hurt. We need to quit wondering about who could sue who and issuing a building permit. How come we always want to assign blame with someone else? Chit happens. Hell, they're trying to rebuild New Orleans???

In 1996, we had a "100 year" storm and at my place, I have more snow now than I did then.

This is why we have insurance. Collect and move on..Glad your relatives are OK - Tell them there are good dirtbike trails above them!!!!.....

(There, I"m all better now)
