Avy in Jefferson?

ya there was two. i was riding within a couple miles of it. i heard one guy died and one guy was dug out. really sad stuff. but we were told not to ride there and im glad we didnt. prayers out to the family

Outlaw and I snuck up ridges to the top of Reas and watched 6 guys pounding all the bad spots. We were going to go say something to them but we were scared to drop the Butt-Crack (6-12 foot hangers)and the one next door wasn't much better so we boondocked over to Keg Springs and back through the new burn. We met 2 guys on the top of Reas and one of them who was standing out on the edge of the cornice said "so whats the avy danger these days?"

That's correct, one death today in jefferson. Very sad. Go to localnews8.com for the story.

Avalanche Kills Idaho Falls Man in Fremont County

By Megan Boatwright Local News 8 Reporter & Genevieve Judge, Local News 8 Anchor/Reporter

FREMONT COUNTY - 21-year-old Josh Jenkins from Idaho Falls died Saturday after being buried in an avalanche near Island Park.

Around 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Fremont County responded to a 911 call coming from Mount Jefferson in Beaverhead county Montana.

Local News 8 has learned that Jenkins just returned from a mission and was going to school in Rexburg.

Fremont County Search and Rescue and the Sheriff's Department were able to recover one man who has been buried in the snow. They weren't able to resuscitate him.

At this point we don't know how long the man went without air. Apparently he was part of a group of 20 or more snowmobilers riding through the area.

Everyone else was able to get off the mountain safely.

Fremont County is encouraging everyone visiting the area to exercise extreme caution.

This is High Time, I was there too.

It's the first time I've been arround a rescue attempt. There were twenty to thirty sledders trying to help. I've never seen so many sledders at Jefferson. Hundreds of guys there. All the help in the world couldn't have made any dif.
I can't give much info. It looked like some young riders.
sorry for your loss.

All I can say is that to the people that know me and my friends form MN , that it was not us. We are safe.

Owen

Sadly, it was only a matter of time before people started pushing their luck in this area.

The mountains win again. :( copy and paste condolences here. There HAS to be a way to get the message out. THIS year is a killer. STOP climbing!

ISLAND PARK - Josh Jenkins 21, from Idaho Falls, was killed in an avalanche when he was snowmobiling with friends on Mt. Jefferson Saturday, January 17.

The avalanche was on the mountain's Montana side, in Beaverhead County. Jenkins' riding companions dug him out less than an hour after the snow cascaded from the mountain, and attempted to resuscitate him. A Fremont County EMT told the News he probably died of a crushing injury from the snow that engulfed him.

Idaho Air One, Fremont County Deputies, Search and Rescue, and Island Park Ambulance responded. Fremont County deputies and Search and Rescue volunteers led the survivors to safety.

Before the group headed out on their snowmobiles this morning, local snowmobilers warned them to stay off Mt. Jefferson because the snow there is unstable and the avalanche danger is considerable. The avalanche occurred in the same place an avalanche killed a Utah man two years ago. Snowmobilers reach the area from trails on the Idaho side of the mountain, and it's a popular area for extreme riding and highmarking.

Brett Mackert, commander for Fremont County Search and Rescue, said about 50 snowmobilers were in the area when the avalanche occurred, but only Jenkins was caught in the slide.

He said Jenkins was wearing an avalanche locator beacon. But Mackert said he was covered with 8 feet of snow and it took other snowmobilers about 30 minutes to locate him and dig him out.

Mackert said Jenkins was declared dead by medical personal who arrived at the scene a little more than an hour after the avalanche. His body was flown by helicopter to the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls.

The snowmobilers were engaged in high-marking, Mackert said, zooming up the side of the mountain to see how high they can go before having to turn around.

Jenkins recently returned from an LDS mission and was attending school in Rexburg.

The Fremont County Sheriff's Office and the Gallatin County, Montana Avalanche Center warn snowmobiles and skiers that the mountains forming the Continental Divide in the Island Park and West Yellowstone area have dangerous snow conditions. Everyone should exercise extreme caution when visiting the area. Avalanche beacons and rescue equipment are a must, but do not guarantee survival or recovery in an avalanche where a huge amount of snow and debris are released.

The mountains will always win and the families and friends will always be left behind to agonize. As for "copy and paste condolences here", how sad and true is that. How many of us were thinking that also? What a year. I guess I'm lucky that I'm not that great of a rider yet. The meadows, creekbeds, and treelines are still pretty exciting to me. R.I.P.

WARNED TO STAY OFF AND STILL WERE HIMARKING UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!! I was west of Jefferson today in the Keg Springs area. Had a great ride were in safe areas all day. Enough is Enough... Please Please Please.. Ride Safe. My heart aches cause someones mother didnt need to lose her son today. I am not trying to be rude I am sick to my stomach. This can be a safe fun sport. Thoughts and prayers to the family :(

Josh was a good kid. I knew his family well. My heart goes out to his family, it hits alot harder when you know the person. I'm already a cautious rider, but will be even more cautious now. He'll be on my mind everytime i go riding.

Atlas. we had these stickers made and most all of us have them on our helmets. It's a sobering reminder every time we ride to see them on each others sled and helmets. :(
