Avalanchers Make Stupid Mistakes

Think About It.......

Now that the sun is shining many of us are excited and in our driveways waxing boats for our 1st trip to the lake.

We pack the car head to the lake and when we arrive the lake is blown out from high winds and a storm is moving in fast .... Hmmmmm lets go boating.

Think About It........

People boat in April??? It's still sled season :face-icon-small-hap

Unfortunately on the snow it's the exact opposite, the storm is gone & it's a beautiful day so everybody wants to put the danger out of ther minds & have a fun day.

I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm just saying you catch more flies with cowcrap. (that's the saying right?)

Good call on the text thing btw, I check CAIC pretty constantly, but I wonder if they have that feature here.

I think the idea of having text messages for local avy conditions is a good one. I'll have to check but I don't think we have that option here. Will have to suggest it to the local avy org.

hmmm...i have a sailboat...so it sounds like idea conditions to me...

Nobody is perfect. Mistakes get made by EVERYONE, trained and not trained. Apparently you can judge one person by one mistake with complete disregard for what they left behind with grieving family and friends and usually a legacy of sorts that left an impact on many people.

Your lack of compassion towards your fellow sledding "brothers" is appalling to say the least. Life is full of risks. Hindsight is 20/20.

"When men are most sure and arrogant they are commonly most mistaken, giving views to passion without that proper deliberation which alone can secure them from the grossest absurdities”

Just as the saying goes. If a human is in an avalanche mistakes have been made!

I like the text idea! I have the avy updates emailed to me everyday, works great!

Actually the saying goes "if more then one person is in an avalanche mistakes have been made." When you go out riding the asumption is that you are aware of the conditions and accept the danger. As a sledder is a potential trigger, the one thing we can control and be sure about is how many are exposed to that danger at one time.

Ask yourself, "sure, I read the avy report daily, but do I really know what they are talking about when they mention things like facets, hoar frost, temperature gradient, PWLs, etc?"

Sleds today allow inexperienced riders to access terrain that was only accessable to experienced mountaineers ten or fifteen years age. As such, an AST 1 or equivalent is not anywhere near adequate training for the riding most do on a regular basis. If you have a level one course and have been riding in the mountains a couple weeks a year for the last five or so years, dont kid yourself, you are not "trained and experienced." Level 1 courses are a great introduction, but they are just that, an introduction. Take more, ride with guys who have extensive knowledge, ask questions.
