I finally got away for a free riding weekend!! The weather and the snow were fantastic! We made a ton of miles, basically ran out of gas each day. Sometimes the guys actually slowed down long enough for me to take a few pictures.
The only significant slides we viewed during our ride in Eagle's Pass on Sat, March 15 were loose slides from steep rock outcrops.
There were lots of observations of cracking and blocks beside our sled tracks, however the recent snow was still so unconsolidated that it had not become a strong enough slab to propagate these weaknesses.
Natural slide in Area 51. North aspect. Across the valley to the west we could see 2 other natural slabs, on different aspects.
We were riding with a large group. The guys ahead of me triggered this slide.
This slab was triggered very low on the slope by the third rider. The riders continued out of this frame to the viewers left before slide started to move. Very soft slab, slow gliding motion and the debris did not set up. I would estimate this to be the March 8 weak layer.
Note the recent slab on the left side of the picture. The next shot is a close up.
We have added a few new avalanche courses for the spring. Take advantage of these dates to complete or update your avy training and save the powder days of next season for riding!!
