I recently had someone ask me about my avatar and if that helicopter was at an avalanche. In light of the conditions here this year I thought I would share with the group. That picture is a few years old but was at an avalanche here in Utah.
I work for Air Methods and we are the vendor company for the University of Utah’s Air Med program aircraft. We employ the mechanics and pilots, the University employs the medical crew.
Last winter we received FAA approval for an avalanche beacon receiver to be suspended beneath the aircraft to search for avalanche victims. Here is the link to the U of U website about its use.
The helicopter is normally requested to aid in a search by using the 911 system or calling the Air Med Communication Center directly. They will evaluate their ability and the conditions of the area and make a determination if they will be able to respond to the request.
