Avalanche safety good-to-knows

Thread Rating

Hey guys, I just did an avalanche course over the weekend and wanted to share some things that most of us probably aren't aware of.

Two-way radios, cell phones and some other electronics can interfere with your transiever signal. You should keep radios a minimum of 20cm away from your beacon, and keep cell phones and other electronics off until you need to use them.

Magnets can throw your signal. One of the instructors had magnet closures on his jacket and his signal showed up 50' away from his actual location.

Anyway, there's a few. Please post if you have more :)

also DONT USE LITHIUM BATTERIES IN BEACONS.

most will transmit but wont recieve. ski

If you have an ipod on for music it will interfere with you beacon, your beacon will still transmit but it messes up the receive function. So if you ski or ride with tunes, be sure to shut off the ipod before commencing a search.
