1 injured, 1 killed in avalanche near Loveland Pass

CLEAR CREEK COUNTY - Alpine Rescue says a man was killed and another seriously injured in an avalanche in Dry Gulch, east of Loveland Ski Area along Interstate 70.

The incident happened Sunday afternoon in the backcountry, not at Loveland Ski Area. The injured skier has been rescued.

Alpine Rescue says it believes the cross country skiers triggered the slide. Avalanche danger in the area was moderate but warnings had been issued because of the conditions.

Another person was in the area and saw what happened. That person rushed to help and performed CPR on the man who later died. Thirty people are in the area helped recover the body of the victim and help the injured skier down.

This is the second deadly avalanche of the season.

Sad to hear.
Looks like Herman's Gulch, exit to nowhere(with the outhouse and trail head) before the tunnel.I've looked at that pitch and always wanted to ski it.A year or two ago there was another slide there with someone seriously injured.
Thought's and prayer's to the friends and families of those involved.

Dry gulch is one drainage up from Herman. At the loveland exit there's a sideroad that people park on, with a gate on it, that's dry.

Both Herman & Dry lead up to the citadel, a well traveled mountain in the winter. There was also a college football team whose plane crashed up dry gulch just before "Marshall" had their accident, a lot of the plane is still there.

Hopefully someday more backcountry users will actually pay attention to what's going on out here, sad to see people dying when they hadn't a CLUE what kind of danger they were in.
