Anyone heard about an avalanche in Ketchum? Just got a call at work from the rescue center about an avalanche with 1 dead and 1 missing. :(

Wondering if there's any news?

I have a buddy down there in K-town....I'll text him in about a 1/2 hour.

That's not good, I don't think any of our friends are riding today.... Please let us know if you hear anything.

There's certainly potential in that area according to the Sawtooth NF Avy Center:

This is Janet Kellam of the Sawtooth National Forest Avalanche Center with your Backcountry Avalanche Advisory and Weather Forecast for Friday, March 6, 2009 at 7:30 am.

The Sun Valley Telemark Series & Smiley Creek Lodge & the Friends of the Sawtooth Avalanche Center bring you this advisory.

BOTTOM LINE:
In the North Valley, Sawtooth Mountains and areas that have received more than a foot of snow in the past week the avalanche danger is CONSIDERABLE at mid to upper elevations on steeper slopes. The main concerns, where it is possible to trigger a slide today, are for windloaded slopes and areas of weak underlying snow in steep rocky terrain.

In the Central and South Valley, we have received less snow and the avalanche danger is MODERATE. The main concern is for windloaded slopes at upper elevations.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK- Strong winds and light accumulations of snow today will bring very cold temperatures and clearing skies by Saturday. Another round of light to moderate snowfall and gusty winds is expected Sunday. Continue to watch for avalanche conditions in wind loaded areas and in steep rocky terrain.

We are riding tomorrow but riding in Fairfield because of the avy danger being so high. My friend in Ketchum heard a lot of sirens headed north, probably to Baker. Hopefully everyone's ok though....

We have gotten a bunch of snow and wind, it's still snowing in Ketchum. A week ago it was pretty sketchy up Baker, now with new snow on that and more wind...

Just released - 2 reported buried, but not much more info:

http://www.2news.tv/news/local/40866337.html

KETCHUM, Idaho (AP) — Authorities in central Idaho have confirmed two people have been buried in an avalanche near a popular backcountry skiing area north of Ketchum.

Blaine County Disaster Services Coordinator Chuck Turner says rescue crews are being deployed to the scene of the slide, which authorities estimate began at about 2 p.m. on Friday near the Galena Lodge.

The Blaine County Sheriff's Office says the two people remain buried.

Lt. Col. Tim Marsano says the Idaho Army National Guard will fly a Black Hawk helicopter over the scene and assist with the rescue efforts.

Emergency crews from Sun Valley, Ketchum, Hailey and Wood River Valley area are also helping with the search.

If it's near Galena lodge it is probably skiers. I don't think that area opens to sleds until May 1st. That is sad to hear.

My buddy said the victim was a friend of a friend.

This is the part that most people have a hard time realizing:
It's not a suffocation as most people assume is usually the case.
Keane was apparently dug free from avalanche debris shortly after the slide occurred, but that injuries she sustained while caught in the avalanche were enough to take her life.

Poor gal.
That's a HUGE avy area too. HUGE chutes up there.
