Avalanche - I wonder if they made it out

This one is a bit odd as the avy broke well above this guy who got stuck.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybPE64boPZQ&NR=1

Nothing odd about that.
Avalanches can be triggered from the bottom of the slope, that is where the slabs have all the compression. For a weak later, such as hoar frost to collapse, A starting zone is different than a trigger spot.. A starting zone is just where the avy begins, not where it is started neccessarily.

As for ther first video, 2 people on a slope greatly complicates the rescue efforts and adds greater stress to the snowpack. Note the obvious terrain trap below.

Yep.

Why do we as snowmobilers continue to have two people on the slope?

I happened across those too, while I was busy watching the race, and that first one didn't look it had a good outcome unless there was some escape route that we couldn't see. Hope it had a happy ending with some dirty shorts and lesson learned.

Not only 2 people on a slope, but 2 people cutting horizontially across the slope. As for the second video, I hope the outcome was OK, that's a lot of snow above the stuck sledder.

2 guys, sidehilling, over a bunch of trees, on a bunch of fresh snow....I hate to say "asking for it," buuuuuuut......

YES some mistakes were made .I just hope every one made it out OK .Iam not here to ripp on any budies missfortune .Its to easy for us to bash after the fact

My first thought is that I hope everyone made it out OK. I am not here to bash anyone as I have made many mistakes as well. Hopefully my comments as well as those from others are not to bash, rather than to help point out the mistakes so that others can learn from them. The best way to survive an avalanche is to not get caught in one! The best way to not get caught in one is Education!

VERY WELL SAID .we all make mistakes

And bad choice in the second.

Take an avalanche course. There are 2 obvious signs that it is not safe in the second vid.

i will be taking a course this fall. signs maybe not as obvious to me
1- cornice
2- no trees (runout)???

please correct me if i am wrong
