The avalanche danger still exists even with low snow this year. The avalanches that are occuring are sometimes going right to the ground because there is no real base this year. An avalanche occurred Saturday 2/13in the Jules Bowl area Near Brooks Lake. The rider staying at Lava Mountain Lodge was injured and Dubois Search and Rescue was called to retrieve the rider. Another rider was above when the avy started. Some in the group were avalanche trained and this may have saved a life. The rider hit a tree with in the avalanche and broke his leg, the group of riders were able to get to the rider in time and get him a breathing hole as he had a hand and his helmet visor visible. Always travel in groups."Think before you go" and keep in mind you are challenging nature. Please remember that some education and quick thinking can save lives. Please also remember to support your local search and rescue, they are volunteers after all. A big Thank You goes out to Brooks Lake Lodge, Dubois Search and Rescue, Lava Mountain Lodge and all the riders that were there helping to rescue the rider. The rider has had surgery and is recovering from his injuries.
