free avy class in north idaho, taken off of the avy forecast

Make sure you put this on your calendars, the State of Idaho Parks and Recreation Department in cooperation with the IPNF-AC, is conducting 2 (Free) avalanche workshops for snowmobilers this winter in Coeur d’ Alene on January 5th and Sandpoint on January 12th. For more information go to the Idaho Parks and Recreation Department website, www.parksandrecreation.idaho.gov, or call Marty Gangis, Outdoor Recreation Program Specialist, at (208) 769-1511.

Don’t forget that the IPNF-AC in Sandpoint and Sandpoint Parks and Recreation are sponsoring 3 avalanche workshops for all snowgoers. We had a good turnout for the beacon class last Wednesday and everyone got out in the snow. The next 2 classes will focus on safe travel techniques and how to make informed decisions in the backcountry. These will be offered on January 9th and February 6th from 6-8PM. All workshops will be held at the Federal Building in Sandpoint and are (Free to the public). For class schedules in the Silver Valley contact Dan Frigard at 783-2130. In Avery contact Ed Odegaard at 245-6209.

If you have a group or club that is interested in more education on avalanche safety we will be available for free avalanche awareness classes beginning in December, so feel free to give us a call. As usual we would appreciate hearing from anyone who happens to observe any recent avalanche activity while out in the backcountry or just wants to let us know what is going on in their area. Contact Kevin Davis in Sandpoint, Ed Odegaard in Avery, and Dan Frigard in the Silver Valley.

Anyone interested in the above class needs to call and pre register with marty gangis. The class is limited to 50 people. It will start with some in class training then we take our sleds and gear to the 4th of July pass and have some field training
