Avalanche Beacons

I am looking to purchase an Avalanche Beacon this year and am wonder if the Backcountry Access Tracker Avalanche Transceiver from REI is a good brand.

I received the SPOT Satellite Personal Messenger for Christmas, which I think is awesome but I think I would be better of getting a beacon. The Spot was purchased at REI so I was hoping to trade it for a beacon at that store.

Yes, the Tracker is the easiest to use and most intuitive for a beginner. I use it and would recommend it.

Easy Ron! You're scarring the kid!:face-icon-small-win I got that Tracker. Couldn't tell you how good it works had never had to use it and hope to never do, but from when we practice it was easy to use. Don't wait, go get one!

Same here. Seems pretty easy to use, of course in the chaos that will ensure after an avalanche even the simplest things will probably seem hard.

Hey I am ok going somewhere else if I can, but if I can't well it will be purchased at REI. Don't worry I will try to hit a greenie on my way out of the parking lot.

Thanks for the other info.

Sorry, I just get red in the face when snowmobilers support company's that give kickback to the Sierra Club.

Hey Hector, You'll have to come up a lot in the Spring so we we can look for my little orange SPOT I lost last weekend. If the stupid tracking feature worked all the time I would have a good idea where it is.:(

It'll be like Easter egg hunting on the mountain. hahahaha

I'm game. I like Easter hunting for the spot! Must say never done it in the mountains. Hooking up wit C4F for Sat. U cool w\ that?

Im with Ron100% onth is one.

Actually it does work well. The biggest problem is that it really needs to be exposed 100%. Only way I could get it to work almost all the time was to clip it on the fish net pocket of my Klim Pack. The day I lost it I was pitched of the sled a couple times while carving in DEEP DEEP snow. See ya later little orange thinger.

I do have a real good idea where it is. Not sure how to go about combing the area now. Think a metal detector would find it?

So then it is it better to have a spot or a beacon, unfortunatly I can't afford both at the moment so I am left choosing.

Sorry to be such a Junior Member.

depends what you are going to do. but they are sixis. The guys i ride with in the steep all have beacons and a couple have the spot. we practice safe so not all are on the hill at the same time. Some times the ones with the spot dont make it to the ride so that been the reason i'm getting one. If you can borrow a deacon keep the spot. If not only you know how safe you are and going to be with the people you ride. Good luck.
ps. I was a Jr. once too.

definately a beacon first........NO QUESTION. While your at it stop by voile and get yourself a good shovel and probe if you don't have one.

Then practice in the yard with a friend or hit one of the Utah Avalanche training sites and practice once in a while. Hmmmm speaking of, I need to get out and practice myself.:o

Beacons

For Christmas I went to Dicks Boat Shop in Clearfield to get my hubby a Yamaha jacket as a surprise and while I was there I picked up PIEPS Beacons for all of us. The owner(family owned) said because I was buying multiples he gave us $20 off each one. So, I got them for $199.95 a piece. Every little bit helps and I would of bought them even if he didn't do that.

Just thought I would pass it along for those who need more than one, I believe that people who take care of us like that should be shared. <smile>

Chele :p

PS I almost walked out of there with a new apex for him...but hubbywasnt that good...but ohhh the deal they had was!! LOL Maybe I should get me one...Lord knows I have been a good girl~~
