Avalanche Beacon?

What is the best buy for an Avalanche beacon? I need to get one and was wondering what everyone else uses? Seems like it would be worth it to get an expensive one.

They are all pretty Pricey, but DONT RIDE WITHOUT ONE!!!! DTS Tracker is nice. Easy to use and works good. Check it out. And its one of the lesser cost ones. DONT FORGET SHOVEL AND PROBE!!!

IMO there are three beacons out there that you should consider.

The BCA Tracker DTS avalanche beacon is the most popular beacon on the market. It is very simple to use on single burials. It is very robust.

The Pieps DSP and Mammut pulse are also pretty simple to use, and when it comes to multiple burials, they are easier to use than the tracker (IMO).

For even more details about each one, PM me and hopefully I can answer your questions.

I got my Pieps through SBD - very fast service, total satisfaction. Get a shovel and probe AND be sure to TAKE A CLASS. The tools are great, but you must practice with them. You don't want to be figuring out how to use them when someone's life is on the line.

You know... I'll probably get burned for this pretty bad but if you aren't planning on riding anywhere close to avalanche areas, why ride with it?

Don't get me wrong, we wear ours every time we hit the snow, and we haven't come close to an avy area in almost 200 miles of riding this season so far.

Well yeah, I didn't say we were riding Cooke. We still wear em even though we don't hit Avy areas. My reasoning is exactly what you said, if we hear about an Avy further north we can get up there and help because we have the beacons.

I sometimes have to remind my riding partner, he keeps his in his pack usually.

You REALLY need to find out how to use your beacon. I dfont mean put one out in the parking lot and everyone walks toward it with big smiles on their faces.
Take a lesson , you will be shocked and be able to really use it properly. I took a lesson and think i should do it again.
Someone who has never taken a lesson and gets into a multi burial is fooked...HUGE. sj
