with all the slides and deaths this year, has there been any one with any feedback. any use of the airbag systems. i thought someone said that there was one use in one of the slides in BC this year???

they never saw the slide coming so the BC airbag was not deployed, at least that is what I read.

I could see them not being used very often. Most of the people willing to invest in the ABS pack are also avy savvy enough to avoid situations where it would be needed.

Between ABS pack, beacon, shovel, probe and all the extra gear I carry....I figure I have around $2k invested in stuff I never want to use!

I was talking to the Polaris dealer in Cooke City and Rick said he had a friend with a brand new ABS bag and he was caught in a avy. Pulled the string and nothing happened. NO bag was deployed.

Needless to say he was a bit pissed off.

I know somebody who didn't replace the handle after doing his test deploy when he first got the bag.

He only replaced the canister and left the old handle in. There is a charge in the handle that breaks the seal on the canister to deploy the bags. Not until somebody else noticed while looking at the pack did he realize the mistake he had made.

You never know what happened? But if everything was set up right I would be pizzed!

There have been several saves with them, search and you;ll find them, the problem is we only hear about the deaths, or problems with them, just took a Avy awareness class, now shopping for a ABS pack, its tough to spend the money but I've spent more on sled mods

We had a sled here locally in northern BC, lost 1 rider. He was hit from behind by the avalanche and didnt get his bag deployed. Apparently the coroner and the rcmp along with the search and rescue guys tested the unused abg to see if it worked and it did. In total six guys were buried in this incident and 1 of them did get thier bag deployed. He was apparently the only 1 to "bob" to the surface. Apparently his bag stayed out there until after the recovery of the victim. This particular story hit really hard on alot of us as we are all frequent runners on this particular "little" hill. It made me order a bag this week. A bag could be priceless and I would still get 1.........

A buddy who went cat skiing last weekend spoke to one of the rescuers in the Sparwood tragedy. Apparently one of the victims had deployed his bag but still ended up buried. This is not first hand info but I believe is pretty accurate....

I dont believe that is accurate. There was ppl involved that had abs packs but they had thier packs off , digging out the 1st victims when the 2nd slide hit:(

ABS bags so far have been 98% sucessful, this figure came from a recent AVY awareness class, and no the insructor doesn't sell them.

As a former Police officer, Bulletproof vests for Police Officers were kind of treated the same ways in the early 70's, people were skeptical until the saves started adding up,

ABS bags work, but it won't be 100%, and we will always hear more when they fail or aren't deployed

It probably shouldn't be considered something that "Works", I think of it like a seatbelt or helmet, it "Help's"
It gives you a little more opportunity to survive
I feel the same now as I felt before i got a beacon, cant stop thinkin about it so i know it's time to get an avy pack

On the ABS website they have a section with very detailed avy reports, this is the summary.

100 known accidents (with ABS) involving 119 Persons (with ABS)
106 Persons with fully inflated Air Bag - 3 persons techn. Failure - 2 persons with improper handling (empty cartridge) – 1 person did not carry handle – 7 persons did not pull rip cord/handle

13 Persons without or with only partially filled Air Bags: 3 persons uninjured, 6 persons silghtly injured, 4 persons dead

106 People with inflated Air Bag: 53 Persons not burried 42 Persons partially burried
11 Persons completely burried (head) but with Air Bags visible on the surface

1 Person with ABS dead (due to second avalanche) and with Air Bags not visible on the surface

Yeap, it's all about getting the odds right.

Helmets in roughstock rodeo is much the same way as far as acceptance. Those that ride with them lower their chances of injury, many still choose not to.

I sled with a tekvest and knee guards. Just doing what I can to keep myself on the mountain weekend after weekend, pain-free riding, and able to show up at work in the morning.

If $ were no object, i'd have an avy pack on my back. Once they gain acceptance, a few more manufacturers in the game, and price goes down, I suspect they'll be about as popular as vests are today.
