ATV use on groomed trails

I was reading a webpage that says:

"When I first learned of the Mirror Lake Highway trail I investigated and was told incorrectly that the trail was not open to ATV use in winter. However, I persisted and sent an e-mail to the District Ranger office in Kamas, and finally received an all clear. By definition an ATV qualifies as a snowmobile and are permitted in any area where snowmobiles are permitted. "

With all the money that is spent on grooming, why would the forest service allow wheeled vehicles on any of these trails in the winter??

This article I'm referring to can be viewed at http://www.utahatvtrails.com/ATVmirror.htm

I can understand a little in the spring they are dying to get out...But winter FN!! I would rather have a heard of cross country skiiers than one atv. Ill show alot more respect to the skiiers also. Plan on getting a roost when I pass you at 90!!

ATV's on a snowmobile trail in the winter makes about as much since as snowmobiles on an ATV trail in the summer.

Utah Law reads as follows:

41 22 12.1. Restrictions on use of snowmobile trails.

A person may not operate a wheeled vehicle with gross vehicle weight of 800 pounds or more on any snowmobile trail that the division has marked, posted, designated, or maintained as a snowmobile trail.

a wheeled vehicle with gross vehicle weight of 800 pounds or more

therein lies the problem.. maybe that weight limit should be lowered.
don't get me wrong, I love to ride ATVs as well...just not in the winter.

Okay then that would restrict MOST 4 wheel drive wheelers. A DRY Sportsman 500 weights 700 lbs. a 800 is 775 lbs. By the time you get water, gas, gear and a rider you will be over the 800 lbs.
