ATK 406 experiences?

I recently salvaged a 1990 ATK 406 dirtbike frome some old guys garage. Unfortuatly, it had a small ding in the side of the clutch case that resulted in me loosing ALL tranny oil. Does anyone know what the oil capacity on it is? Searched EVERYWHERE! Does anyone even have any tips or experiences on this "red-headed step child" of the motocross world? Thanks!

Give me a List of stuff you need to know and any parts you need and I think I can Hook you up.

I got her all put back together last night. Dumped one quart in and it looks like it needs atleast another. I ran it up the road and back last night, first time I have ridden it, it is SOOOOO torqey! The Rotax makes it a lot of fun to ride! Somewhere along the road when I had it out, though, I lost the rear master cylinder brake cap! I'm going to go out and walk the road and see if I can find it. It was just such a cool bike I couldn't pass it up! I'll have to post some pics of it later. Thanks for the help! I might have to have you help me out with some parts!:face-icon-small-win The only other thing that I couldn't find was the torque specs! Does anyone know where I can get them? Looking to re-torque the head, big air-cooled 2 strokes tend to loosen head bolts!

We used to have a demo at the dealer I woked at.
OK bike I guess... Great bike if the price was right.
You won't be out running other bikes, and the frames tend to crack, but decent bike.

Where were the frames cracking? I'm not a jumper, so I probably don't have to worry about it. I bought it because it was dirt cheap, looked like a perfect woods bike, and was flat out different! Does anyone know if they made a pipe and silencer for these, oh, by the way, it does have the wierd 4 sprocket anti-tension drive system. Thanks!

Hello my name is Bill and I design and bulit the first 406 for Horst at ATK back in 88 I was also the number 1 dealer up untill I close down and retiered! I still have a lot of parts if this will help!
Now back to your oil in trans it holds a little less than I quart there is a level screw just in front of the Kick start lever on the clutch cover with the bike level fill till the oil come out here! Also on the bottom drain plugs do not take out the hex bolt this is a Kick start spring retainer only take out the allen plug.
Here is my shop number if that will help (530) 622-3660
Hope this info helps I may also have a owner manual laying around. Also you need to check the timing and if it is not advanced you need to also the heavy flywheel really helps with just these and the reed modifaction they will run with a CR500 Honda and have all the low end you will ever need.
Bill

My neighbor at my cabin has had a 406 for many years. I borrowed it once when my bike was down. For it's day, it had great suspension and was light weight.

I would say to replace the cam timing belt if you don't know the history. Those have been known to break on that Rotax engine. I liked riding it, but wasn't wild about the close ratio gearbox, Seemed like 1st gear was too high, top was too low and I was thru the gears and tapped out in a big hurry....Other than that, a great bike in it's day......

Cam timing belt? Did you ride a 604 thumper? The close ratio box in it can be a pain for running in the dunes, but in the woods, I think it works better. The motor makes a ton or bottom end torque, not a whole lot on the top, but for the kind of riding I do, I couldn't be happier with it!
