ATF for chaincase

I've heard of alot of guys using ATF in there chain case. Anyone here do this for there 1M's?. Also, how do I check the tension of my chain? and what is to loose or to tight?. I'm assuming you gotta take of the cover. I've also been reading about getting a HYVO chain?. Its stronger, but what does HYVO stand for? where would I get one?. This will be my first season on the sled and now I'm paranoid about riding and breaking the stock chain. Like you guys I go back back into the mountains of Alaska and DONT wanna suffer a broken chain back there. To drain the chain case should I take off the cover and deal with the mess or pull the drain plug and then re-fill with ATF?. Sorry about all the questions, I just wanna make sure she's ready to ride.

As for oil this is endless debate but in a nut shell you can use atf, 75-90 sae 30 ect....
you can check the chain tension on the side of the chain case is a 9/16 bolt and nut, back off the nut a few turns and turn the bolt finger tight and then back about 1/4 of a turn.
you can drain it by pulling the plug and putting a pan under it or just pull the case and wipe up the spill. if you have not check the chain for damage i would pull the cover and take a look. pull the can and lay the sled on the L side and pull the 6, 1/2 bolts and take a look. with it on it's side no oil will spill out.

I have used both ATF and gearoil with no problems. I do use synthetic oil, I feel it is better in the cold weather. When you look at the chain it is the same style as the chain in your trucks transfer case and that uses ATF. Also the chain on mine has an automatic tensioner.

I for one had never had a problem with the stock chain. It all depends on how you ride? If you like big air and climb over cornices without backing off the throttle when you hit, Then expect breakage! It is all in how you treat it!

i have ran amsoil atf since my was new in 05. took the case apart last year and everything looks good. as far as the chain we havent had any break out of the 4 kk we ride with

That's reassuring to hear about the stock chains. My 2004 900 151 has around 2,000 miles and last year I inspected the chain and all looked good.

I refilled with 75/90 syn gear oil. My Toyota transfer case requires gear oil, but not sure if it is a chain like my GM trucks.

I did my own "cold flow testing" a few years ago and the 75/90 gear oil flowed better than the synthetic gear oil from Doo, so I figured that was good enough for me.
