AT TIres

It's time for some new tires on my F250 and I'm looking for some feedback on some options. I would say my driving is 75/25 for on-road/off-road. Use the truck to pull snowmobile trailer, horse trailer, and camping trailer. I'm looking for just one tire year round that is also competent in snow/ice conditions...maybe that is asking too much.

I'm leaning towards BFG TA KO2, Cooper Discoverer ATW, or Toyo Open Country AT2. I've also heard that Goodyear Duratracs are OK.

Any experience or suggestions on these tires?

I had duratracs on for a day or 2 on my 2014 Cummings. But they felt really spongey so I took them back and got a sat of nitro terra grappler G2s. Have been happy with them.

I have had 2 sets of BFG AT's. They were decent traction for the first 10K miles then they were average till they wore out. I only got about 43K on them before I got tired of them and pulled them off. They felt heavy on the truck and got noisier than I thought they ought to be.

I have run 2 sets of Toyo AT's (I & II) and they were similar in most ways to the BFG's in traction, and longevity. They were a bit quieter and didn't feel as heavy on the truck.

I then installed a Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx in a little taller size. I feel that these did feel heavy but they were a taller size so I expected that. The traction has been very good through the 50K mark and since I am now at 59K on them I cannot complain about this tire.

I was impressed with the Cooper tire enough that I have a set of Cooper AT3's in the garage to go on when the roads start to get slick. Since my Maxx's are almost shot that might be pretty soon.

I do run a dedicated studded snow tire (General) when the roads are icy and I'm towing.

I have no input on the ATW but seriously looked at those too, but since I do have the studded tires I thought I would just get an A/T type tire instead.

I have 4 3/4 ton trucks and an excursion. Run duratrac tires on all them. I get 40-50000 miles on a set. Never felt that they have soft sidewalls. Run them in 16-17-18 and 20" sizes. They are my work trucks and tow all the time. Only so so in the mud.

I have been real happy with my ST Maxx's and sitting at 59K on them. I'm hoping to run them on my company truck when it gets delivered.

We haven't had very good winters the last couple years so I didn't get them out in the nasty stuff like I usually do.

I put KO2's on my 16 3500. My last 2 choices were those and toyo AT2's. A buddy has those on his 1 ton and loves them. Both good tires.

You have a pretty good list. I have Toyo AT2's and they have been great. Good wear and good traction IMO. They can be a little loud but probably not much worse than other AT tires. I think the Duratracs are a little quieter but they are softer (some say the sway because of this). I'm curious about the Cooper tires too. I hear nothing but good things about them.

I've owned nine Ram 3/4 ton and 1 ton diesel pickups in the last eight years. I put 35k-45k on per year with a mix of heavy towing and daily driving. I've ran the Nitto AT G2s, Toyo AT2s, Toyo MTs, Cooper Discoverer AT3s, Hankook ATMs, and Cooper Discoverer STTs on each one. From that list here is my ranking on each:

#1 Cooper Discoverer AT3 - only tire I've ordered multiple sets of and will run them on any vehicle I own now for an AT tire. They have excellent traction on dry roads, wet roads, ice and snow, muddy woods and fields, and gravel roads. Best AT tires I've had in mud, they keep pulling like an MT almost. They also wear very well, even when not rotated regularly. The last set I had, 315/70/17s D rated on an '05 3500 SRW Ram work truck. Regularly pulled heavy every weekend. Rotated the tires every 15-20k-ish miles and they've lasted 8 years and ~70k miles and still have 4/32 tread left worn evenly and still have them on. I also have a set on my 14 Ram 2500, 12-15k miles on them and only wore down 1/32, 95% tread left. What I like about them besides lasting long and having great traction is the traction never changed as the tire wore, even now with barely tread left they still have good traction. Just put a set on my wife's Jeep and my dually. The only negative thing about this tire is the sidewall looks like a passenger tire, has an aggressive tread but smooth sidewall and doesn't have that "tough" look.

#2 Cooper Discoverer STT (now STT pro)- Owned one set, size 35x12.5x20 E rated, on a '12 Ram 2500. Put 30k miles on them pulling an enclosed trailer from MN to WY, loaded with a sled deck, or daily driving on highways. Rotated every 5-6k miles regularly and wore even. Great dry, wet, gravel, and snow traction. Really good ice and mud traction, very surprised how well they did on icey WY roads in the wind. After 30k miles they still had 40-50% tread left. I would buy another set in a heartbeat, but for the driving I do an AT is better for me. Negatives= price, they aren't cheap if you have big wheels or want big tires.

#3 Nitto Terra Grappler G2s - Owned one set, on a '12 Ram 3500 DRW, size 285/75/17 E rated. Put 30-35k miles on, rotated every 10-15k miles. Still have four tires with 35-40% tread wore evenly, two are at 20% wore uneven due to being a dually and the rotation the back insides wore like sh*t. They are showing some weather checking in the tread from the pickup not being driven regularly I think. Good traction on dry, wet, and gravel roads. Pretty good ice and snow traction. Did surprisingly well in muddy fields and woods but not great. I'd buy another set, but based on price and performance vs. the Coopers, I ordered the Coopers.

#4 - Hankook DynaPro ATM - One set of 295/70/17 E rated on '10 Ram 2500. Had 30k miles on them when I sold the pickup, still had 50% tread. Good dry, gravel, ice and snow traction. OK wet road traction, I could get them to slip easily under a heavy throttle. Muddy woods and fields were OK but you better have 4x4 and a way out, obviously not a mud tire but did not perform like the Nittos or Coopers. I liked the tire, they wore even and lasted a long time, but for the traction they had/didn't have I'd consider others over this tire for my heavy diesel. Would be better suited for a lighter gas vehicle or SUV, I'd buy them for a Jeep or 1500 pickup.

#5 - Toyo Open Country MTs - One set 35x12.5x17 E rated on 08 Ram 2500. 25k miles put on and 50% left. Great traction on dry, wet, gravel roads and mud. Surprisingly great traction in ice and snow, could back up in 2wd on an icey hill without slipping. Wore quickly with a heavy load on, could notice a difference in tread depth from front to back after trips out west, but after rotating they evened out. I would defiantly buy them again, but they are way more expensive than the other tires in my size.

#6 - Toyo Open Country AT2s - One set of 285/70/17s on a 13 Ram 2500, pulling heavy regularly. Have 20-25k miles on them now and are down to 40% tread. When they were new the traction was great in all conditions except muddy woods and fields, they gummed up and wouldn't clean out. As they wore, the traction decreased exponentially and now with 40% tread I'm debating taking them off before the snow flies this year. I won't buy another set especially for how much they cost compared to other brands.

I also had the Nitto Terra Grapplers and I would mention that I thought they were very similar to the Toyo AT2's that I have now. The Nitto's are a little cheaper.

I'm really surprised that more of the Duratrac guys haven't said anything yet.

I've ran two sets of AT3's all on half tons. Got over 50k on all of them.

Convinced my buddies to buy them on a multitude of 1/2s, 3/4s, tonners, and they all have had good luck with them.

I just put ATW's on and compared the crappy highway Goodyears that came on my truck they are louder (AT tire vs highway), but I haven't had to put it in 4 wheel while I was deer hunting. When I was out scouting running the Goodyear's I was in 4 wheel when I shouldn't have been.

I'm a big fan of Coopers. My dealer has taken care of me after I ran over something and instead of just replacing the one tire he gave me another one at warranty cost just so I had a matched pair.

I know with first hand experience of at least 300-400k miles on the AT3s and all have been a been positive experiences.

I have 275/65R20 Goodyear Duratracs on my 2014 Cummins. I also had them siped and I have been very impressed with them. Best snow tire I have ever had. I have about 26k on them and they should go at least 40k.

I had BFG ATs on previous truck. Not bad but I like the Duratracs.

I also liked the Toyo MTs I had but they are noisier.

My buddy really likes the Cooper ST Maxx.

I may try the Nitto Ridge Grappler next go around just to go up to 35" tire. If the Duratracs came in 35/20 I would buy another set for sure.

I just took a set of atw's off of my GMC service van with about 68,000 miles on them. Replaced them with the same thing. I will probably put the old ones back on next spring because they still have about 1/2 tread left. My AT3's had over 90,000 when I got rid of that van. Lots of highway miles, but some heavy loads at times.

How do the ATWs compare to the AT3s in the snow/ice?

The AT3s were good, and the ATWs are even better. I travel SD and Iowa a lot and they hold the road when a wind gust hits the van on snow or ice. They are my favorite tire so far. I wish I could Cooper made them for my wife's Traverse. All the sipeing makes them fairly quiet also.

ATW's while related to the AT3's are a ground up build to make a better snow and ice variant of the AT3's. They are three mountain rated, where as the AT3's are not. Supposedly a little softer compound to help with winter traction.

68k on the ATW's? If I can get 3/4 of that I'm going to be a very happy customer and put them back on. That's the one thing I'm nervous about is how are they going to wear over the summer.

I just went with a set of BFG All Terrains for my winter tire which is a lot of mixed use driving and then will pick up a 2nd set of tires and wheels for next summer. I know I have read a lot obout them not being as good as the older versions but I have run a lot of these over the years and always had good luck with them for my general use. I am amazed how quite they are on the new truck. Truck is a 2012 Ram 2500 I just picked up. I put on a ton of hwy miles in the summer so I figured I would go to a less aggressive summer tire in hope to pick up more miles on the tires. Maybe a rugged Terrain or Michelin tire.

I've been running MT's on my Duramax. I love the looks but time for a change before winter since they are 1/2 worn and now look like ice skates.

I'm liking the Cooper S/T Maxx. They seem to have a deep tread without being a mud terrain and lots of tread blocks/siping. And, I think they look a little tougher than the BFG KO2's or Nitto AT's.

Anyone have any experience with these in a 35x12.50-20?

Cooper atw's are a great tire. The traction and stability that they offer is amazing. They wear fairly well too. I am at 57000 miles on my set and I would say there is still 40% of the tire life left. I will be replacing them this year and I will be putting the same tire back on. On a plus note this is one of the few winter rated tires that come in the factory 20 inch tire size for fords.

I settled on the ST Maxx's. They have very favorable reviews and are reportedly quiet, durable, have good tread life, and appear to be good in most conditions (gravel, rocks, snow, mud, etc.). They are a hybrid AT/MT tire, so they have a little more aggressive tread. I was able to get them for quite a bit cheaper locally than some of the other options I was considering. And I know it is a silly reason to buy a tire, but I like the looks of them:face-icon-small-coo
