Assault Shocks?

A local here in Maine is soon to be headed north for the Cain's Quest race in March. He and his team mate are both riding 2010 Assaults. Both stock with the addition of extra fuel tanks. They have put a couple hundred miles on and both have blown rear shocks. For those of you who don't know about Cain's Quest, its very ruff terrain for long periods of time with very minimal resources. Right now they don't know wether to change out the rear shocks completly, or to just have them re-valved for more abbuse. I am looking for anyone with some good adviceor experience on this. There is about 30k on the line and they can't afford to have these issues. Thanks in advanced for any info.

If that is the case then have them get some FOX Zero Pro track shocks. They are VERY hard to beat and can be adjusted to any type of riding style that is desired.

IMO, walkers are junk compared to Fox's

REALLY! 62 people have read this and only one has any response. I thank you for your response. I am curently researching the FOX zeros. I have found that multiple people are very un-happy with there waker evans. Mr. Evans, you should be ashamed of your product.

Your race is very similar to our Irondog race here in Alaska. You will not find a sled running air shocks of any brand in this race. It is just too brutal and no parts to be had anywhere to speak of along the way. The shock of chioce is the Fox Zero pro's. Very tough shock. Next would be the Ohlins. Great shock as well, but hard to get and very expensive. Run the Zero Pros and don't worry. Run them all the way around. Front suspension as well. It is even worse to lose one of those.

I was on the FOX website and they didnt list the fox zero pro's for the Assault. The only ones they listed were the FOX floats. Does anyone know where I can find these for the Assault?

Travel is going to be a little bit longer on the Assault.

That Assault has 10 inches of front travel.
The Dragon has 9 inches. Now I don't know what your eye to eye distance is but I would measure an Assault front shock and browse the Fox site and see if you can find another shock at that length.

The 10' Assault has no air shocks on it, the 09' had walker piggy back airs and they suck. What were the conditions to blow rear shocks, I ask this because I have on several occations put my rear shocks through hell and have no problems, the fronts are another story, my sled leans to one side when sitting for a while. I sponsor team #25 in Cains Quest.

I don't know alot about the sled but I am told that it has walker evans all around. The rear shock blew out on both sleds. From what I am told they were both being riddin like an Assault is supposed to ridin. HARD!!!

You are a very smart dude and i respect your posts but i do feal this is incorrect info. The BEST shocks in my honest opinion are the Fox EVOL X. You can get variations for the front, and for the track shocks.

You simply can NOT beat them. The second best is Z-broz shocks but don't fool your self, the fox shocks WILL take anything you throw at them. They are also much more adjustable on the hill than the Z-broz.

TRUST ME, you ride a sled with Fox EVOL X shocks and every sled you own will be getting a set. Every aspect is adjustible. The Evans are NOT a bad shock, but in stock forum they are a tad soft, nothing a recharge can't fix. I have some new Walker evans off of a 2009 dragon i am selling for $250 a pop OBO....Or i can get you Some fox shocks for around $1700....if you want the best, you have to pay for it!

i own the assault in question. first off the front shocks are not the problem as they are walker needles and i feel they do an incredible job. the rear track shock is my problem. we have blown 3 on 3 diff. sleds all under 300 miles. the lower shock mount seems to have hit the fitting on the bottom of the shock when the suspension compressed. dealer replaced shock and turned fitting, i havnt had a prob. so far, however i dont want a blown shock in the labrador backcountry either.

I don't dispute what a great shock that either of those are! They are wonderful for us weekend riders or even hillclimb races. My point is that on a race of this magnitude, being as remote as they are, as long and brutal as they are, and no parts or pit stops "off the clock", imo I will trust all my time and train to a quality set of spring shocks over any brand of air shocks. Other than for those two races, you are absolutely correct.

I would be calling the guys at Carls Cycle for some advice. Make sure to let them know exactly what race you are setting up for as well. They know shocks about as good as anyone around. They should be able to get you set up and should also know why you are haviing problems with your surrent setup. Good luck in the race!

thanx for the advice. where is carls cycle at? as we cant afford to spend $3400 on two sleds for shocks, can my walker be made to handle the abuse? could i buy just the rear track shock in a fox? we are adding about a 100 pounds to the sled between fuel and gear, most of it on the back.

well i just got off the phone with my cains quest race partner and he blew shock number 2 today on his assault. this is the 2nd shock on a sled that dosnt have 600 miles on it! when we bought theses sleds they were advertised to be able to do cliff drops, sick air, etc. i assure you we arnt doing that here in maine. we are leaving for labrador in a month and theses shocks cant hold up to a stock sled, we havnt even run them with the resevoir tanks full of fuel yet. i hope polaris steps up to the plate on this and dosnt just give us another junk walker shock. my team has bought 6 new polaris sleds in 2 years and if you dont make it right there will be know more, besides seeing your beloved assaults at the race with some not so nice stickers on them. p.s i had to buy a pc5 today to make the thing run right cause apparently they cant get that right either.

Hey Kevin! I recieved this in a PM last night. This may be the ticket. I have been searching in the for sale forums and there is some stuff in there that might suffice. Let me know what you find. If there is anything we can do to help just shout.

"I've been running Fox on all my sleds for years. I've worked with Carl's Cycle in Boise, ID for all of them, great guys & they'll set them up for you properly.
I just did my '09 Assault with Fox Evolv X's up front & Zero Pro's with 5/8" dia shafts (heavy duty) on the rear.
The rear kit has a Float 2 in the front track position, but Carl's can hook you up with a Zero Pro instead, more durable.
Set up works great.
I'm also in Maine & I know about Cains Quest.
Hope this helps.
Rob"

I dunno, I think there is a major difference in doing a cliff drop and jumping the sled and running the sled on a beat up trail and having a constant pounding. Know what I mean?

The sled was not designed to be an aggressive trail machine, sucking up the bumps.

while i agree with you that they are two different things it dosnt change the fact there is a problem here. we have blown 4 rear track shocks on 3 sleds and some wernt even being ridin that hard. i personally think there is a clearence issue. i havnt seen the latest kill but i bet the fitting on the bottom is cracked. time for fox i guess
