Artic cat secondary

I picked up a artic cat secondary for my 503 and it appears that it bottoms out against the jackshaft against the frame where it starts to taper to a larger diameter even with out a spacer. It also has a longer shaft on the clutch by about an inch past the jackshaht shaft to make it go past the end of the jackshaft to run the retaining bolt on to hold it in place,it falls short by about an inch. I know that i have to turn down the square stock key to hold it on but did i buy the wrong clutch ? It' off a 99 500 and has a red/white spring with a 53-51 helix on it. Any advice or detail pictures on how to make this clutch work would be great or do i just need a defferent scondary ?

Thanks
Todd

???

are you saying it don't slide on far enough to line up the belt? On my old cat sled the clutch retainer bolt was long and there was a spacer that slid inside the clutch hole as to extend the jackshaft. On my 6 and machined the jackshaft down more to the inside of the clutch so it would slide on farther to align with my tra. Hope this helps. You can give me a call when ever you want. 605-380 2423.

PS it is finally snowing here but windy ER than a MO FO!!!!!!!!!

arctic cat clutch

you have to taper the end of the shaft near the frame, to allow it to go on far enough, then cut a spacer on the end of the shaft so you can put the bolt on . Leave at least a 1/4 inch past the end of the shaft, may need some washers also, so the clutch can slide to self center. Also you need a .003 shim stock maybe more to keep it centered. You will need about a 43 to 45 helix red with white stripe spring should work, I dont have my 503 setup yet. This is the best clutch you can buy, period. Bud ;good luck, We have about 24 " at the pass today and -30 below now -6 in missoula. Sunday

Thank you

Thats the information i needed, thanks for your help ! I will give you a call this week Les to see how your hawk ran. :D Bud thank you for your advice on the clutch it sounds like you have forgotten more about clutching then i will ever learn. I wont be able to get any work done for atleast two weeks on the machine since i plan on riding next weekend if the time permits. And Les i installed that belt but my clutch does not seem do have enough preload even at a b-6 setting to keep the belt riding much higher then the old but it did take up the slack like what we talked about and i ended up with a little less then 1/32 of an inch of side play which should make a huge defference.

Take care all
p.s Bud what effect do you think my hawk would have with that current helix ?

helix

Well I think that it will take off like a rocket , but It wont backshift at all. Itll just stay in high gear. but on hard pack it will work alright, I use a 48-44 on my 600 in the deep snow and a 52-44 now since I geard it down but I havent had it in deep snow on a hill just leave the spring in the weakest position on the driven. With a 43 helix you could try a artic yellow on hard pack , you may be really impressed, I dont have any experience with the 503 yet, But I know the yellow wont work in deep snow. They get hot and melt. get soft. Have a good evening Bud

Where do you get the shim stock .003"? How much to take off the jackshaft and how did you do it? I am not a machinist, nor do I have a lathe to do it with. Can A local shop do it? I suppose I have to take it off.

Machine away

Yes you will have to remove the jackshaft to have a shop machine it down for you. I would give les a call ( J&L snowhawk as he is sorrta close to you and he might have the specs on what your asking or might even have access to the parts . Remember to check your bearings or replace them when you remove the jackshaft. ( cheap insurance and thier cheap like 8 dollors a piece )

artic cat secondary the easy way

bmiller We had new jackshafts made at Fabcraft Here in Florence Montana (406-777-1200 talk to Mike Cassidy). They fit the artic cat secondary, use the same bearings and will recieve the original cog pulley. It cost about $180 and they have the specs so you could just order this jackshaft and you wont have to worry about machining off the shoulder or using shim stock which by the way wears out. If you need instructions on how to change the jackshaft get ahold of Skip aka Hawkdoggen he has changed all of ours. Or check in the users manual?

Thanks for the advice on shaft

Has anyone here had good luck with a rollor on thier 503 and if so what helix set up did you end up with ? And what did you give up to get your performance ? Ie top speed ,torque ?

Thanks
Todd
p.s am going to try and ride this weekend with family and friends in easton area if the snow is there. Anyone want to go call me 1-253-405-6269

Hey Todd , you shouldnt have to "give up" anything ,a roller typically backshifts up and down far better than the stock one does so if anything you should gain all around youll just have to find the right degree of helix probly something close to whats in your 503 should put you in the ballpark or close then the fine tuning for your conditions

Hawk

So what your saying i i should just try to find something close to the 50-44 helix that is in my secondary now ? Is it safe to say that the first number represents lets say the torque and the second is speed ? Does that make sence or am i backwards in my thinking. If not is thier a happt medium that you should stay some many numbers close to one another ? I am new to this worl of snowmobiles and hawks so i have no idea about them. On the other other hand i can make a bike scream lol.

Thanks for everyones input

Correct me if I ma wrong but I believe 50-44 just means the angle changes from 50 at the beginning to 44 at the end, this creates a helix with a curved profile. Where as a helix with one number say 44 is a straight profile.

thanks Hawkified. Talked to Mike and he is going to look into building me one. He said he will need to get the numbers togither for the ones he made for you guys.

PS What size bearings do I need to buy to replace the ones I have? Mike gave me the info on the best type, now I just need the correct size.

Same size bearings just buyin new ones made in u.s. ! I believe skc is the brand and most bearing houses can get em for ya jus get the # off seal and yur off an runnin :D Oh and i dropped specs off to mike today
