Are my EGT's too high?

I am looking for some input about whether or not i should go up another size in my main jets. Right now i have 480 main jets. I am running a SLP head for 0-3000' feet, an SLP y-pipe, AAEN Pipe, HPS can, VForce3 Reeds, and intake mod.

I am hitting 1300-1350 degrees on my egt's only after repeated long hard pulls. Otherwise it runs strong. I am just wondering if i should jet up or just run it. Midrange egt's are fine (1100-1200)

Thanks
Evan

Thats a tad high. I shoot for 1200 WOT and 1100 mids.

HPS can is too tight for that setup. Go back to stock or use an SLP or Aaen can.

I never EVER take a tech's word unless they're talkin' 'bout their own product (and even then I've seen screw-ups). Just for kicks do one ride with the stock can and the Aaen pipe. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised, especially by the increase in low end pull.

Yep the Aaen gives a Big extra Punch,At least it does with the Aaen can

rode with the 490's yesterday. I did some really big climbs and it got real hot again (1350), but otherwise it was good the rest of the day.

Thinking i should go up to 500 mains.

Does anyone know how much temp change i should see from 490's to 500's, etc?
Thanks
Evan

Did you try the stock muffler?
If not then I would say the HPS IS too tight since your egt's aren't going down by jetting fatter. Personally I would sell the HPS and get the matching Aaen can.

as asked, what does your wash and your plugs look like? I think you are probably fine. If you've been riding that way, taking some big pulls, and it doesn't get any hotter than that, you're obviously not buring down, so those numbers are good for your sled.

Depending on probe placement, you may have higher or lower temps, I think you are just fine. IMHO

plugs are fine, wash is fine with the 490's. I Jetted up to 500's, the temps came down to 1200 but there was a very noticeable amount of power loss.

Sounds like the 490's are the ticket. Check plug color at different throttle settings, also take note of where the EGT's were reading. I've seen pistons sluff off the exhaust side of the crown at much lower temps.

I dont have the stock can so i cant try it out.

Will the oilly residue wipe off of the piston or is it hard and crystillized? If some will wipe off- your ok -crystillized pull piston and inspect-is conrod blued from to much heat? Should"nt be so much carbon-how much oil are you using? I run 490 mains in my 07 x , had to ajust oiler was using wayyy to much oil from factory.

i run 40:1 pre mix. I did the oil injection delete kit after a few hundred miles on this engine because the stock oil pump was way to rich.

The nature of your question alone tells me you have a misunderstanding of how egt's work, what the reports mean, and how you find out what they mean. It also leads me to be concerned that you also don't understand how indepth plug reading is. You cannot get much info from examining a plug without magnification and a light. You also get NO accurate information unless you kill the spark at the RPM level you are seeking a read on. Also note that different durations of time on a given RPM can make a different pulse or temp report so it's a very good idea to experience or test at the outside of what you are expecting to do. 5 seconds at 1300 can be great while 25 seconds at 1300 can equal a hole or burn/heat related expansion failure. So experience and being smart and safely conservative while you establish your knowledge is wise.

Anyone who advises you to not use an EGT has absolutely no idea what they are talking about. Once you know how one works and what the reports mean it is the single easiest and most accurate diagnostic and monitoring tool any normal sled operator can afford.

Had you already been armed with this information you could have had your answer in the field many many miles and dollars ago and I would be able to still see the letters on my keyboard!:face-icon-small-hap:face-icon-small-hap
