Apex questions

I'm looking at buying a 06 apex with 720 miles. I went and look at it today and i noticed a few things. First, the steering is REALLY hard, is that normal? second, the clutch kicked in at to high if a RPM i thought so what is normal? If u grab the clutch (secondary) how much slop is there in the chain case?

Steering is really hard... did you ride it or were you turning it while on the shop floor? Its a 700 # sled (its a little front heavy) but a lot of that is suspension set up. I think my clutch engages at 4000 or so. Should be very little slop if chain is adjusted right.(does it have reverse?)

I was riding it but 'm used to 06 900 rmk's and they steer hard too so i'm wondering if it should be way harder then that? It does have reverse but this thing has like 1/8 turn of slop grabing the secondary clutch.

Check the chain and make sure it's adjusted right. I have over 2500 miles on my 06 and checked the chain for the first time and it was very loose. So loose that I decided that I better change the chain before it broke. As for steering... they are very front heavy and when moving slow are hard to turn. I just replaced the bushings in the steering post last week and that made a big difference. If you want a clutch kit that really works call Hartman Inc. Tom has these things figured out, mine feels like it has another 10 hp to the track over a stock sled. Watch your drivers, even though mine is stock they are completely worn out. Changed them today with the chain deal and they were so worn out they damaged the track where they went through the windows. I'm missing a few clips and the windows are enlarged and some were torn, also replacing the track.

The chain is tight that was the frist thing i checked. But when i go WOT it has a growl coming for that side and it sounds a lot like my 99 700 RMK did after i ran it out of oil in the chain case. also What kind of oil does yamaha say to run in the chian cases?

If your going to open the chain case check the lower gear retention bolt. The head has been breaking off this bolt on quite a few sleds. Yamaha is supposed to have a higher strength bolt to install.

Thats on the Nytros, not the Apex.

Apex w/ reverse will have a lot of play/slop. 1/8th sounds about right. Pop the chaincase cover off to be safe, but i would bet its fine, yamis w/reverse are notorious for having what seems to be alot of play.
