Apex gearing?

I have an 08 40th anniversary Apex MTX. I was thinking about changing the top gear to a smaller one, but 1st off I dont know whats in there, is there any way to tell before I tear into it? I have seen threads where some people say 20 tooth and some say 19 tooth. My top speed is over 100mph (if that helps at all) and if I do change it, will I have to do clutching changes as well? Thanks for any info.

All the Apex's I've seen (mountain) came with a 20 tooth top gear. I ran Hartman clutching in mine and he suggested going to a 19 tooth gear and it ran fantastic. Get with Tom at Hartman Inc and he'll get you set up.

Thanks for the input, I forgot to mention , mine is all stock, and I am fine with that, I just want a bit more bottom and, I dont need 100 plus mph. My last sled only did 80 mph and I was good with that.

Do yourself a favor and talk to Tom Hartman and get his clutching... best thing I did for the sled (other then the turbo later). Tell him that your stock and you want to stay that way, he'll get you a much better profile weight for your clutch, a spring and his helix. When mine was setup with his clutching guys that had stock sleds thought I'd done something to it, it felt like it had 10-15 more hp to the track

well tom hartman is the one who told me to do this.not really sure. but he said he likes doing the bottom gear. but he said only if you dont have reverse. cost difference was something he mentioned

Diffrence is you don't need to change the chain,
and one tooth less on the small sprocket is almost the same as three on the big one,
so 40 to 42 on the big one isn't as big gearing change as go from 20 to 19.
Also, the radius is very small on an 19, the bigger the better.

I run a 18/43 works great, 2 years now no issues. Pulls real hard in the powder.
