Apex Engine

Looking for some names of some of the top engine builders. This past season i lost my coolant and got it hot while doing a pull at 18# Needless to say stuff goes bad at that moment in time. I pulled the threads right out of my block and tried to go back together with 12mm studs but 2 of them were just 2 far gone. So im lookin at getting a new block and probably going ahead with rods and pistons and maybe cams and head work. Just looking for some suggestions. I know Hurricane and onestopperformance. Sled will be ran right around 18# at all times maybe a bit more maybe a bit less. Main thing is reliable. I lost out on some good late spring riding this season and i DO NOT want it to happen again.

Thanks Vec. After talking with them i liked what OSPRacing had to offer. Ill be having them build me a motor. Cant wait till next riding season. BTW i have some 10mm ARP head studs for an apex for sale if anyone is interested. There new with nuts and washers. Id sell them for $200 shipped. Normally $250.

I would be a bit cautious with drag race motors. I have not heard of a hurricane Apex engine that has not failed in the mountains. They may exist, but I know of many failures. I am sure it is the fact that they have sleeves.

I don't want to confuse Hurricane with OSP, because they may be on two different programs.

We have pounded the lakeside Apex engines for years, and have not had one fail.

If your running 18psi give or take don't waste your money on a big expensive build with sleeves or closed deck. If it were me I wouldn't even do rods and pistons. I would shim it and run good fuel with stock internals at that boost level. I known you might think might as well do rods and pistons while your in there but if your not utilizing them by running 20 psi or more there is no need to spend the coin IMO.

I would have to agree, 18psi really isn't that much. If anything studs, rods and pistons just to make yourself feel better or if you need to bump the boost to whoop on a buddy or something. If anything put some money into a good head to get the thing to spool up quick and make more HP per lbs of boost. Most problems Ive seen is bad tuning and poor fuel. Cover booth of them and you would be very surprised on what Boost you can run!

Yep I agree! ^^^ Its deto that kills stock rods and pistons!

I think ted janetty had his rx1 drag sled pushing mid to upper 20's for boost levels with many, many passes and thousands of miles with stock internals, BUT good fuel and good state of tune is why!

Im pretty limited to 18# atm with my 2860 turbo. Going to upgrade to the 2871 next. Doing rods and pistons now while its apart instead of later. I lve ran 20# but was so close to 18 I didn't bother. Isp has some stuff he does to make them spool faster as well as there own fueling/ignition system. Hurricane looks nice but I've heard to many bad things.

K after talking with everyone im still going with OSP to build my motor. I like what he had to say and his ideas about my type of riding and what he had to offer. Im sure others are good as well i just like OSP over the phone better. After i get the engine back and some time with it ill report on what i like or dont like at the beginning of next season. Also i will be upgrading the to the 2871 as soon as i get some funds. Hopefully before the next year.

The fastest mountain sleds I've seen are running Lakeside built motors, Chuck built my motor last summer and I wouldn't trade it for anybodys. Most important part of any turbo sled set up is a reliable fuel system that has been PROVEN in the mountains.

Guess we will see how a osp/Boost-It engine will compete. Nothing against lakeside but when I talked to him he seemed very knowledgeable but didn't seem like he wanted to build a motor. Jim with osp just seemed excited to take on the build.

I've talked to Jim a couple of times, he is a very knowledgeable guy, I have no doubt he would build you an awesome engine. Glad to hear you are going to run Boost-It on it. :face-icon-small-win

Yeah. I really dig the adjustability of the Boost-It kit on the hill if needed. Next winter can't come soon enough.

I ride crap a little rough. First day I climbed a tree with it. :) honestly tho if they let me do all the testing on powersports stuff. Stuff would be bullet proof for the average rider. New motor is going to be fun tho.
