Anyone wear orthotics (custom insoles) while riding?

OK, needing some new boots for riding as well as for out in the snow in general. I have had 3 foot-related surgeries (1 on the left, 2 on the right) in last two years. I have to wear doctor-prescribed orthotics to wear in my shoes while at work and such to keep my feet supported and lined up (as good as they can be under the circumstances, anyway.)

So I am needing either some type of boot that I can take an insole out of to put in my orthotics or one that has really good arch and ankle support that won't leave me wanting to cut my bum ankle off as soon as I hit the snow. Of course, my budget is the deciding factor, but I don't want to waste money on cheap boots to have them not perform and be back to square one again. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

An orthotic is going to give you minimal support in a riding boot. They are designed for weight bearing/walking/running etc. If you have an unstable ankle they may give you some added stability but typically during riding there is not alot of "walking" and most of the boots are quite stiff if not firm.

Find a good boot that has decent support and you will be fine. If the orthotic fits without to much added pressure then that would be fine also.

I have large feet and the sled boot manufacturers don't provide boots in my size. I therefore wear whatever I can find. I have been using a waterproof leather lace-to-toe boot from Cabela's for the last couple seasons. They perform well, but I still use a Spenco insole under the stock footbed liner. Once these are in place, my feet feel great after any walking or just the standing/landing on the running boards during the day. I like this style boot since I can lace them up as tight as I like over the various range of the laces. They may not be as stiff as a true riding boot, but with the insert in the bottom my feet/ankles and lower legs feel great.

Hopefully you can find something that fits your needs.

I wear orthotics due to plantar fasitutis (sp) in my everyday wear. But I don't wear them in my HMK's. Once my boots are on thier is very little movement possible..., a little toe wiggle is all.

i wear orthotics whenever i ride. have a bad arch. not doctor prescribed but i my chiropractor took a mold of my foot and had some made for me. expensive, imo, at 300 dollars but i have definitely noticed a difference. wear them no matter what i'm doing, sleding, snowboarding dirt biking, mountain biking, and every day use. i have pretty average sized feet and bought a pair of burton snowboard boots. the orthotics slide right in. not sure what yours are like but this works for me. good luck.
