anyone know a good machine shop

Im in need of yet another custom shaft, seems I have gotten the shaft:face-icon-small-sad the last two times on this project.
Anyone know of a good local (WWa) machine shop capable of turning a 4340 shaft and through heat treating??

I work at one in Kirkland It's called Jemco Inc.
How hard are up treating the 4340?
Are there splines or threads?

The shaft is approx 1.5 ft long 1.25 dia with a step down on both ends and center to 1.000 keyways at both ends thru hardened to approx 44 to 50 Rockwell.
I dont know a ton about the hardness, but see thats what most aftermarket 4x4 axles are built to..
Ive broke 2 of the chrome alloy custom shafts in the last year, takes out both clutches and my pipe. Not to mention kills a great weekend.
any suggestions??

Something to consider...harder is not always better (can't believe I just typed that...lol).

If the shaft is prone to flexing, then harder might not be the answer. Is a center bearing a possibility?

Its a custom snowhawk. the shaft breaks at the transition to the downsized clutch dia.. Previously the shaft was made from 4140 and not heat treated.
I was also unhappy with the transition at this point..It should be a nice radius not a small 1/16 rad..
I'm thinking getting something like spring steel would be the ticket or at least like an aftermarket 4X4 axle..
I definatly dont want something to hard..:face-icon-small-sho
 
S7 might be a better option than 4140 heat treats real nice and is very tough.
A lot of shafts in the heavy equipment industry use this tool steel.
A 1/4 rad at the transition would help a great deal.
I don't think you need to go over 45 r/c on any of the tool steels.

Thanks Ill look into that. I was planning on going with 4340 and threw heat treating. If this happens again There will be a nice bonfire on the mountain..
