Anyone into Traxxas R/C trucks??

It's clear from the amount of time I spend on here, that, I need a hobby. I'm clueless about what to get, though.

What do y'all reccomend? Nitro or electric? What are the pros and cons?

Can a guy run these in the mud and snow at all?

Thanks, and if anyone has any pointers on what to buy, or any pics, please let me know!

RC trucks

It kind of depends on what you want to do with it. There are stadium trucks that have good suspension and are go fast speedy jumpers that soak up the terrain and jumps. Then there are rock crawlers that have tons of flex in the suspension, really low geared and will crawl over about anything.

The nytro stadium trucks can be finnicky to get started and keep running but they will go like heck when they do run. They aren't worth a crap if you want to try to crawl them because of the speed and gearing.
They can be lots of fun but you need room to use the speed. I have a blast with mine at the skate park, gotta be careful of the skateboarders but they are fun.

If you are looking at rock crawling try www.rccrawler.com

They have a ton of info on modifying and running electric rock crawling trucks.

Pros of nitro:
A lot of power
Sound pretty cool
Don't have to deal with batteries
Cons:
A little more money
More maintenance
Noisy, bothers some people

Pros of electric:
Less maintenance
Quiter
Still a lot of power with brushless and the right battery

Cons:
Still expensive if you want a lot of power
Have to deal with batteries
Unless electronics are sealed, can't run in wet/snow conditions

My buddy has a 4wd nitro Traxxas T-maxx, its cool, tons of power, but a lot of maintenance and pretty noisy. It will go about 45 out of the box. I have an electric Traxxas Rustler VXL w/ a brushless motor, it will go 35 out of the box, up to 70 w/ the right battery and gear(over $100 battery). My son got a Mini Monster 4wd truck for Christmas, it is kind of slow(good for him at 7), but a lot of fun still, especially in the house.

Either way, an expensive fun hobby, not as expensive as sledding though. I am looking forward to taking them camping next year.

Yeah you got stadium(Traxxis), rock crawler, or monster truck.(Savage)

Definately go Savage if you want to jump and air out. Be prepared to spend some money. I have a first time crash story(tore off a front wheel in a wild spin into a truck tire) like 90% of all R/C owners do.

One word of advice, search Ebay, it becomes your best friend when looking for parts. You can get a lot off Ebay instead of going to the local shops and spending twice as much.

Any experience with the 1/5 scale gas units? ?That sounds like a ton of fun. I may go that route.

How about the new traxxas electric? The big one? Any experience?

I'll sell you a package deal if you want.

2 RC nitro vehicles.

1 HPI Nitro RS4 needs a pullstart and boom 60MPH.

1 Traxxas Nitro TMAXX 2.5 with almost every mod you can put on it. Just needs a motor rebuild and it should be ready to rock. I used to run it in the snow and through water without a problem. You can do it you just need to put balloons over the servos.

Looking to get $225 for everything. The brand new chassis and shocks on the tmaxx are worth that alone.

Fun to have but I don't have time for them anymore.

I have a Savage XSS with a .28 Turbo.. it will wheelie through the first 2 gears and book through the last gear until i swerve to hit something.. Awesome truck have yet to have to replace any parts.. I also have a REVO with a RB motor.. it s a fun truck to play with takes a beating and is a little smaller than a savage.. doesnt flip as easy.. I have 3 1/18th scale electric trucks they are a blast.. buy a brushless motor and a lipo battery and go play out in the streets with all of buds and best of all they are quiet.. they hall but for a little truck..my next monster truck with be a electric monster truck liek what traxxas just released the 16.8 T maxx or whatever it is.. I am a fan of burshless motors and lipo batteries.. Nitro is cool but it gets old after a while..

I also have a helicopter.. i am still learning how to fly it.. last time the battery came out and there was some caranage..

3-HPI Savage X 4.1's, 2-X 4.6's, 1 Savage 25 w/ 4.6, and aTraxxis Revo 3.3 in our little group. The HPI's are best for jumping and just beating the shat out of. The Revo kicks all of our arses at the BMX track, but it will not bounce off the light poles without replaceing parts like the Savages do they are flat out tough!!. At the skate park I launched mine out of the pool in 2nd gear landed over 30' away then proceeded to cartwheel at least 8 times, landed on it's wheels and drove it back to me with no damage!!

If your like me, If I can mod it, I usually always do, right off the bat. Savage nitro and go wild. Or if your content to try and get your moneys worth out of an Electric and not do anything but replace stock parts then go that route. I could just never keep anything stock when I was a kid, still haven't figured it out yet. :D

I have the Traxxas T-max 3.5 fully modded, all alluminum light weight body and titanium running gear. It is one tough SOB for the money right out of the box. I have jumped it 16 feet high and landed on the nose many times and it still keeps on trucking. The only thing that has hurt it was when we had it on the road following it and hit a pole at 65mph with the front right tire. Broke the plastic a arms and bent the steering rod a little but 20 dollars later it was better than new.
Sand- awsome
snow- awsome
mud- messy but awsome
speed- awsome
air suspension- awsome
Nitro methane fuel-25 bucks a gallon
maintenance- easy

the thing rocks and for the money (I spent 400) not counting the mods it is a lot of fun and my son gets enjoyment out of watching and playing with dad. Sometimes I even let him try it (he's 4) haha
