Anyone hunt w/ English Pointers? Had 1 given to me.

An outfitter gave me a 2 year old. He has Labs and this Pointer. The Pointer wanted nothing more than trying to hump the Lab B!tch so that's why I got him...not sure if it's good or bad, yet. LOL

GOOD:

Very nice gentle dog.
Great w/ my 3 kids and other dog.
House broke.

BAD:

***ger can JUMP. Put him in the back yard when we got home. Went to pee, came back out back and he's GONE! Found him a block away. Put him back, was out front doing something and wa-la, there he is again.

Thought WTF so I put him back there again and went out front beside the garage and peeked thru the fence...BAM, here he comes.:eek::cool:

And he seems to NOT listen. Simple commands as come, sit, etc. Great in the house but the minute he gets outside he's a different dog...GONE. Let him out at noon today. Just opened the front door and was gonna hang w/ him...GONE. I walked around the block, couldn't find him so I got in my outfit and found him 3 blks away. As soon as I stopped and yelled at him he came (didn't when we first went outside--the whole neighborhood heard me, he didn't).

and then poof!! gone

I know how you feel!

Just got back. I live on the edge of town and there a dirt trail a mile from me. I let him out of his crate and he took off. I went down to the end 2/3 of a mile or so and he eventually made it to me. Came to me when I called him. I let him run back to where we started. I opened the back of the Expedition and he jumped right in...I guess he was done!

He just takes off when first given the chance to run. He did come the 2 times I called for him.

How does one hunt w/ him? He's so damn far ahead.

I'll catch it for this I'm sure, but my Dad used to hunt Pointers. Seems most are just like that. Dad wasn't the most patient man, if after the 2nd whistle the dog didn't respond, Dad would let him get far enough out to NOT kill him, but sting him good. And then he would roll him. Usually once or twice and dog was heading back to Dad when the whistle sounded.

Just a story, not advocating or recommending anyone do it.

Flame on.

Yeah................... not cool!!
good way to injure the dog or hurt the very senitive eye!! Not saying I have never felt like it but come on!!

Did you see that line as a closing? I plainly stated I didn't think it should be done.

My Dad was of a different age, he's 70 now and I doubt he would do it today. But this was in a time when every penny counted. A dog that couldn't be hunted was worthless, another mouth to feed in a growing family. Saw him do it more times than I care to. He always made sure dog was far enough out that #9 shot wasn't going to do more than sting, never saw any serious injury happen.

One of my buddies does field trials for pointers, and he brings his dogs along when we go on our annual pheasant hunting trip. He has run both German and English pointers over the last 10 years, right now he has the English pointers.

I like the Germans a lot better, they seem to work closer in the field and I just like hunting behind them better. I think the English pointers cover more ground, but I think both are equally effective. The English pointers also seem to have more energy at the end of the day - but I can't say for sure.....

Get a good shock collar and don't be afraid to use it.

Two words shock collar. I have labs and a brittany. My lab has a tendency to take off and when she does i call her and if she doesnt come i nail her. It only takes a few times and they learn. My collars have a beep on them so you can beep them before you shock them.

x2 on the shock collars. They work great if you use them correctly. Like rmk900 said, mine too has a beep function. I always call, then beep, then zap. After few times of this, we never count to three anymore! Money well spent.

x3 on the shock collar. Works great if you do it right, but my dog has figured out that if she's not wearing it I can't hurt her, so follow the tips about how to keep the dog from figuring out it's the collar that causes the pain. They should be in the owners manual. Although I would imagine that eventually any dog will figure out the collar, hopefully by then they respect you and not the collar.

I understand, I wasn't being critical of you.

I've been witness to the act and had to help dig a couple pellets out.
So I have very strong feeling against such methods!!

you need to get the dog to bond to you, he's prolly been in a kennel his whole life and now he's FREE!!!

Pointers need a TON of excercise, learn him to follow you on a quad or bicycle with leash...never ever let him outside w/o a leash on or in a 6 foot fenced back yard. Some trainers even rhode their dogs (harness them like a husky and let them pull a little bit)

get a book on training pointers, reinforce the basics like WHOA, COME, HEEL etc this will also help bond the dog to you.

ask the guide what commands he uses, and stick with those commands.

please don't get a shock collar and start zapping the chit out of a good hunting dog.

all good chuckar dogs have bb's in their ears. ;) it's like jewelry and makes 'em feel pretty. :D they listen next time too...

btw, shock collar is much more effective than low-base 8's at 100 yds. I prefer my Tri-Tronics, but really like my roommates dogtra too.

I like the shock collar idea ....... wonder if they make it with diamonds in it. Might save me some sled funds when wife goes to mall ....

Seriously, the shock collar is just todays version of the birdshot in the rump method my Dad used. Probably is more effective .....especially on an early morning dew-soaked brush hunt.

A guy can do what he want with his dog. All I ask is if you are going to hunt with me don't bring a completely out of control dog who won't whoa and come at least 90% of the time on the 1st command. Don't shoot your dog ever for a few reasons, I don't really care if it from a 1/4 mile.
I won't hunt with you for a long long time if ever.
If I'm driving, I might not give you a ride home.
And for my finally.....................

I'll tell your wife, if you don't have one I'll tell mine!!!!!:D

It is simply unnessesary!! Punishing the dog by shooting at it because of your lack of preperation doesn't make sense!!

Do what it takes and invest the time it takes to give your dog the best chance at succeeding!!:beer;
