Anyone here installed AC in a sled trailer?

I just ordered a Coleman Mach 15 and plan to install it this Sunday...its gets hot as hell here in north Utah, and a frequent trips to Moab this year will be brutal to say the very least...eek:

Few thoughts:

-My 22' enclosed trailer came with the pretty paneling walls a drop ceiling…. no insulation, and im not going to rip the panels off (screw that)…but I will stuff some insulation in the sheet metal drop ceiling

-This AC unit should pull 500-1kW…..that should be 9 amps at 120VAC

-I plan to run 12ga wire from the AC unit to a outlet that will be mounted on the outside

-Im looking at a Subaru 4KW generator, not too noisy and the price is right; those Honda EU gen sets are way too much money ($2K for a 2KW gen, I know they are quite as hell, but good grief!)

-I might spend a night or two in it this summer, but the AC option is just a way to beat the heat in between rides

Has Anyone done this?……anything I should know before I say “damn, I should of done it different”

Thanks in advance

You might have to add an extra brace in the roof for the wieght of the unit. When I order my featherlite I order the option to put ac in it. It came with an extra brace at the vent and wiring run. The unit easy to do. Install it in the vent area cut the boot seal to fit and wire. I insulated my trailer though, roof and sides. The bare aluminum roof gets very hot in the sun.

^^^thx

the unit just got to the house today, opened the box and it seems pretty damn big, some added roof support might be good thing

Hey Hatcher...have you checked out the Yamaha EU style like I think there is a 4500 & they are considerably cheaper than Honda & dang tight little units! I have a mobile grooming rig & have been checking them out myself for my next rig. Right now I have a Generic 7500 & the thing runs awesome, but talk about brain dead from listening to it all day!!!!

Heres a link:

Thanks for the help mini, however i did look at the Yami genertors and they are still a little over priced what what i need, running AC/Microwave/TV at full load will be near 3Kwatts so its best i buy a 4KWatt and keep it jsut above part load.....the yami and honda 4KW gens are 2,500-3,000.....yes they are light weight/small/quite.....but the subaru is somewhat quite and half the price. I found a 4.1KWatt subaru for $1,300......im still looking around for a few more days to buy the gen

No way dude, those things must be some fisher price chainamen product

EU gen sets are still very new to the market and priced high, give it 2-3 years and they should drop

Back the project-----took and once over on the trailer and discovered the two roof vents are the same size as the AC framework.....took the forward vent off and the thing has a solid steel frame, this is great news, no fab work, just plug and play:)

Wow those are good prices guys! Let me know what ya end up w/ & how it works! Mac what is the brand you are talking about for $1400? Is it quiet? I am still gathering info myself! What do they claim they burn an hour?:D

Hatchers -

You must be smokin something man! Honda EU2000i are right around $950 all over here in UT (call the guys at Croft in Woods Cross for a great price). BUT - I bet you can't start the compressor on that A/C unit with just 2000W - you will need more to get it going. General rule is about 2400 ~ 2600W to get that compressor/condensor started up. It's a load! I have experience with the A/C unit on my travel trailer.

Now - $2000 for the EU3000i is about right. Is that what you meant?

Check KSL.com - there are always great deals on generators there!

Yeah, 900.00 for a honda EU 2000, 1400 or so for the EU 3000.

The problem with the 2000 is you dont get the 30 amp setup which is required for compressor startup on an AC unit. You have to step up to the 3000 or ive seen the kit to hook up two 2000's together with a 30amp breaker and plug in.

I guess I must be missing something

I know I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I think I'm more than just a handle:p But I'm not sure why you would put an a/c unit on a sled trailer. It tends to be fairly cool in all the areas we ride, heat is the unit of choice. Please be gentle with the darts I know are coming...:D

Welcome to Utah....

80* high today - 45* high tomorrow!

Snow one day - Sand the next!

Sled Trailer - Bike/Wheeler/Sandrail Trailer

This year we'll ride sleds into July the way things are going - you just may need the AC at 9500ft! :)

If you put in a heat pump on the trailer it has to start the compressor in either heat or cooling mode which is where you get the big amp draw on startup.

one unit dual purpose plus its easy safe heat.

Go back and read my posts, i need and will be buying a 4KW Gen set.

I'm a EE, so the math is simple.....

May or may not find this interesting but you can buy bridge kits for the honda 2000 and the yamaha 2400. S0 4-4800 power at significantly cheaper price and when you need a smaller unit you dont have to pack the 200 lb generator.

Just an FYI

honda 4000 bridge watts with kit under 2k

yamaha 4800 bridged under 3k
