If you're going to leave it stock, you wont be happy with the Nytro (and yes, I ride a Nytro, not stock). If you're going to be adding boost at a later date, then it is the best choice, IMO. The Nytro needs about $10k spent to lighten it up and add boost.

If you plan on leaving your sled stock long term, then any of the '09 800's from the other 3 would be a good choice.

i mostly agree.
if your comparing a stock nytro to any stock 800...its not even the same league.

the stock nytro w/ a weight loss plan and properly setup suspensions (and probably a track), could be a lot of fun. but its not going to be any hill climb champ.. its fun to boon dock and play in the trees.

saying that. after riding a 800 (840) for a few years, and going to a stock nytro...i wouldn't ever ride one stock.

put a huffer on it and you'll have a fun factor you've never realized possible. :D
i honestly miss some thinigs about the 2s rev, but end of the day, or end of the year...i'm much happy in the long run on the boosted Nytro, period.
you do learn to ride differently, or change your style...and/or advance your abilities...

Its too bad turbo kits for these things are so expensive, especially when you look at the price of an automotive turbo....they are about 1/3 the price of a sled turbo kit.

Let's stop trying to make the stock Nytro into something it's not. Comparing it to a modern 800 class two stroke isn't a fair comparison at all. Horsepower-wise, the Nytro is NOT an 800 class sled. All the 800s hover somewhere around 150 HP. The Nytro is a little below 140. This makes it more of a 700 class sled. Mine has always done pretty well against comparable 700s, but of course it gets smoked by the 800s. It's expected. It does however go pretty much anywhere the 800s do. It just takes a little more finesse from the rider and takes a little longer to get there. I'm not the best rider out there to be sure, but I have learned to make my Nytro go pretty much anywhere I dare to take it. However, it will never be a hillclimb champ without some kind if horsepower boost. Just my experience anyway.

That said, I agree that the Nytro does definetly need a diet. 3-4k in weight loss mods go a long way towards freeing up the horsepower that the Nytro does have in stock form. An exhaust system will help a little too. Not everyone wants, needs or can afford a turbo. The Nytro performs decently (not spectacularly) without one. But weight loss is key IMO. Mine will probably be boosted eventually but I wanted to make sure I got pretty good at riding the sled and getting a feel for it before I added that kind of horsepower. Just my 2 cents.

All good points Timber. I am not into climbing the biggest hills out there anyway. I like to climb some moderate hills and play in the clear cuts and rolling hills and meadows. I guess my concern was that if I keep riding with some of my buddies that I would be left behind trying to get into some areas. On the Apex last season I got pretty comfortable on it, but I always had to keep the momentum going and when I got stuck I was STUCK! It also tired me out pretty good at the end of the day. So I looked at the Nytro and figured well it only has 10 less hp but it weighs at least 50lbs less.

I guess it could use a longer track than the 153 which wouldnt be a big deal. You would think it shouldnt be that far off a 700 class sled. I had a 2003 700 rmk with a 151 track. I thought that sled worked really well, would the Nytro compare to that machine?

Buddy had a stock Nytro last year, it was comparable to the 08 700 RMK 155. They traded marks all day. With a header and pipe combo and a 162 challenger extreme, the other Nytro had no problems keep up with the XP's. The one with a port and polish, header, pipe, track had no problems beating up on the XP's and the 700 RMK.

My backup sled is a 2003 700 RMK 151. The Nytro compares to it pretty well. IMO the Nytro has more on the bottom end. Both sleds are pretty similiar in climbing abilities. The Nytro is definitely easier to boondock with IMO. I used to ride with a guy that had an 07 D7 and it was pretty comparable with my Nytro too.

Any mods to make a challenger exteme 2.5" fit or just straight swap? I talked to a dealer this afternoon and he said the Nytro just doesnt quite have it compared to the Apex. He said guys are going to a longer track and that makes a big difference. That has to be the main difference between the 2 because I cant see 10-11hp making that much difference considering the weight difference between the two machines. The nytro has to be about 70 lbs lighter wet than the Apex. Probably wouldnt take much to get a Nytro up to 150hp anyway.

Going with the 162X15 3 pitch it will go right in with either apex rails or extensions. You can find used apex rails for 200.00. No other mods required. If you want to go 16 wide you have to get different drop brackets and turn some bolts around up at the front of the tunnel. 150 is atainable with pipe, airbox, and header mods along with power commander.

It looks like I could be very happy with the Nytro if I have enough cash to throw at it. I guess it would be a work in progress. I love the Yamaha reliability and features I just wish modding them to be on a level playing field with some of the other machines wasnt so pricey. How is the clutching on the stock machine?

I am sure there are improvements to be made. Never did find out what the modded Nytros were running. It seemed to me that during a climb the stock Nytro needed to load the motor a litte more. It just seemed to rev and not start upshift.

Ya my Apex use to do that. Then I had a buddy make some adjustments to the primary and that helped alot. It use to hit the rev limiter all the time. thanks for the insight Tnytro!
