Just checking to see if anyone in the area uses or has experience using HAM or shortwave radio and has some recs for equipment. It would probably sit in the closest and gather dust but seems like something I should have for if\when the SHTF.

or a Kenwood.....gotta get the Bronocs game when your sledding right?

I do a bit; not real active in the HAM community but I do keep a membership with CRA.

VS/Yaesu/Standard Horizon definately gets my vote. The UI sucks, but they're getting better (Check out the FTM10. Don't need a manual to figure out how to operate that one). The radios are rock solid, my FT60 has taken some pretty hard hits (skidded across asphalt more than once, dropped out of the truck, dropped off a tower (~30 ft onto rocks), dunked in water, goes sledding with me, and it's never missed a beat. Battery lasts forever too. 2-3 days with moderate use, it'll go a day of good use on high power from a full charge.

Kenwood's got a good set of hardware, and the interface is a lot easier. Some mobile models have a built-in TNC for data/APRS.
