im looking at buying a terex hr13 mini excavator, it has 260 hours on it and looks new, im wondering if it has enough force and weight to dig compacted rock it weighs a kittle over 3000 pounds. im going to dig in his yard on monday but i think it will be more sand then anything wicth wont tell me anything except if its worn. he wants $12,000.00 for it. thanks to any of you that can help

Don't know alot about Terex brand.. but maybe some info on the size.

I think the 13 is in the 3500# range, which makes it a glorified round point shovel. It'll dig alot harder than you can of course, but it's extremely limited. I think the breakout should be around 3000. Unless size is that important (you need to get through door ways and such), move up to the next level. Price should be about the same, and most of them will be only 60 inches wide (as opposed to 39"). But the breakout force will more then double. Plus, you can actually reach a dump truck.

The little machines are great...when you can't get anything else in the spot. But they are so limited, they are a speciality item.

Go see it. And fill up a wheel barrow. Count the number of buckets to do so, just to put it in perspective. And no, you won't be digging rock.

yep, 3500#'s is a little shy; I dug out my daylight basement foundation with a 8000# Volvo- put the first hours on a NEW rental machine:) and it kept a Allis-chalmers HD-5 cat busy pushing some pretty substantial boulders/clay dirt away all day! Go as heavy as you can haul with your own trailer, then buy a bigger trailer/machine nest year and keep the old one too; fuzzy logic the wife says:rolleyes::D

thanks for the info. looks like the terex is out, komotsu or sunward is in, and a case skid loader to go with it

Go John Deere for mini excavator. They are pretty much bullit proof. Komatsu parts are pricey.

Terex = big trouble in my opinion.

Better to buy a cat, komatsu, JD/hitachi if you are going to have it for awhile

Go as heavy as you can haul :D

Buy as big as you can afford.

Also buy a name that is popular locally, better chance of having parts available and faster resale.

We run a Kubota 121-3 9000# unit, lots of digging, lifting power -only had very minor break downs "hoses".

I can't tell you anything about the size, but we've owned two Terex's in the last couple years. Started out with a HR32, set it up and used for logging. Used it to operate a tree sheer and grapple for de-limbing and loading. Ended up being a bit small, so we now have a TXC175. My boyfriend likes it a lot, haven't really had any problems with the machine, just regular maintenance.

Shop around, these days 10 grand will go a long ways. I got a TB135 works great about 8400# wouldn't want to go much lighter, good power easily tows behind the pick-up.

I've put about 350 hours on my TB135 primarily building rock walls and light grading. It is a very capable machine, but I definately wouldn't go any smaller. Many times I'd be moving bigger rocks or stumps and wished I had the 145.

It is 7,600# with an 8,400# breakout force. I bought it new, so it only has 350 hours total, but it has been completely trouble free. I haven't looked at the market lately but it might be hard to find a quality machine of this size for $10k. When I was looking 2 years ago you'd have to pay twice that and you'd get something in questionable condition.
