I bought some power-extending tow mirrors for my truck and I was trying to put them on this evening.

It shouldn't be that big of deal, but I could not for the life of me get the damned interior door panel lined up right and back on ...

I wound up breaking a bunch of plastic tabs on the door lock latch and the metal wire for the latch and all this ****.

Does anyone have any advice on how you actually get this door panel back on once you get it off cuz I'm really screwed if I can't figure this out ... I'm already gonna have to go order a bunch of new plastic tabs and **** for it on monday but Ir eally dont wanna have to pay a dealer to have to install these mirrors for me.

I got it off and the mirror on the one side ok but getting the panel back on I've been screwing with it for 3 hours and only broke stuff ...

ANy advicE?> heh

you need that cool little fork tool for poppin the plastic tabs ...then once you get em out you need to put em back in your panel ...a quick solid tap with the heel of your hand and them lil basteges go right back in .....start at the side and then one at a time arounf till they all set ....other than that ......about 4 beer ..

If I remember right, they slide up. They don't have plastic clips like the older cars/trucks did. If you broke the big white plastic 90 degree things, you will need a new door panel. I had a 99 and had the panels off a few times. The door lock thing also pops out of the panel, so you remove that first and put it in after the door panel is slid down.

no the big ones arent what I broke.

I bent the door lock latch metal wire thing and broke a plastic tab this like plastic "slider" part of that assembly hooks to on the inside of the door panel. I dont even know how to describe it on here other than it's on the inside of the door panel and is basically like this plastic slab thing ... has two fastening points that attach to the door panel and I broke the top on and now the door lock latch doesnt work..

bah I guess I'm just gonna have to bite the bullet and take it to the dealer I am absolutley horrible at screwing around trying to fix **** like this :(

sam ting here- only I broke off the big 90's- I found out lock-tite 454(awesome superglue) bonds them great!! And those little plastic things that lock the handle rod to the latch should be cheap at the dealer. Maybe even at Napa? If you take out your bottom storage tray you can see what you are up against. 2 screws and slide up.

welp, turns out I'm a complete idiot...

I guess the moral of the story is dont try a new project you havent done when you're sick and coughing so hard you're making yourself dizzy cuz you wont think straight.

turns out the key to all this was not being a moron :)

Anyways, instead of doing it with the window rolled down, I did it with it up, lined right no no problem. The other thing was that plastic slider thing was actually a fastener for the door panel and not part of the locking mechanism.

So after my stupid *** bent the lock latch wire all up trying to run it through this plastic peice thinking it was a slider, it turns out that;s where one of the 7mm bolts went through, not the metal wire.

duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrr

this really is a cake thing to do, you just cant be a complete idiot and pay attention to what you're doing hahah

when i changed speakers in my 04 gmc, I just used a long thin prybar and flashlight and some patience and got both panels off without breaking any of the clips. Was a bit surprised by the ones that you had to push up

I take em off everyday. Wish i could have helped ya before ya fubarred it up

uhg I dont know if anything could have helped me I had my stupid cap on pulled down around my whole face or something yesterday ....:o

Anyways I got it bent back well enough that the door lock latch works, but it doesn't go as far back in the locked position as it used to by about 1/16" ....

Which is fine with me, it's not worth trying to fix at this point .... I just need to pay more attention next time and not try this stuff when I'm sick or something.

The mirrors I put on are really nice, now all I gotta do is take it into the dealership and have them program the computer for power extending mirrors instead of power folding ones and I'll be set ...

Much nicer to have wide towing mirrors than the factory midget mirrors :)
