Anybody else trail-riding an Apex MTX?

Snowchecked a 2009 Assault and loved the long-track experience. Now gonna add a 2008 Apex MTX to the collection. We don't really have trails in Illinois and ride in ditches. Going to the U.P. 6-8 times a season really makes me feel like long tracks are really all I need. Does anybody else ignore the "classification" of snowmobiles, and ride mountain sleds everywhere, regardless of where they may choose to ride?
 
I ride mine everywhere. You almost always have to ride on a trail for some period of time to get to the play areas, and also coming back. But sometimes if we're riding with the kids or my grandma or sometimes just for a night ride we stay on the trails, no problem. The MTX works fine on the trail, just get some scratchers if you don't already have some.
 
I understand taking precautions to preserve the machinery. But the fact that "mountain" sleds are very user friendly, and so very capable over a wide range of conditions, makes me wonder why more people don't own these sleds. Instead, they criticize your decision and attempt to demean your analysis of what works, and what doesn't. I've been riding for 30 years and have never been happier since buying my Assault. The longer track adds so much to the ability of the sled.
 
Honestly, I enjoy the long track, it handles the bumps much easier. I remember the days of banging around on my Exciter, my back was through at the end of the day, long tracks just suck up the trail.
 
Yes, the bumps! They are minimized. The increase in straight-line stability, the extra traction provided when braking or accelerating. The floatation. I always thought mountain riders were far more capable, experienced, than flat-land trail riders. It took a long time for me to develop the courage to buy a mountain sled, and I'm so glad I did. I'll can't imagine ever buying a short track again. These mountain riders have been harboring a secret for a long time!
 
Agreed, but I don't think the manufacturers are on board, seems like instead of building more mountain sleds, they're dropping them. I was excited about getting a new Apex this year only to find they dropped the MTXs altogether.
 
Yamaha dropping the Apex this season makes me think there's something new coming. And after seeing the price of the new power steering model, I decided to grab a 2008 left-over. 13g's is pretty steep for some of us. I'm not the kind of guy that has to have the latest and greatest. But, I do appreciate what the factories develop.
