any way to tell what gears a 86 ford has

If the rear end doesn't have an I.D. tag I would jack the rearend up off the ground far enough so you can spin the tires around. This works best with two people but I have done it by my self too. Anyway spin the tire around one full turn as you count how many times the driveline turns. If it is a 3.55 the driveline will turn 3 1/2 times for every one full revolution of the rear wheel.

86 Ford 7.5 and 8.8 gears are
3.27, 3.55, 3.73, 4.10, 4.56

3.55 and 3.73 are most popular

I have a few sets of Ford factory 3.73 ring and pinions for the 8.8 axle if you are interested, I even have a rebuilt factory limited slip from a 31 spline 8.8 I could throw in I regeared my BII 8.8 to 4.10 and installed an ARB locker

3.73 and limited slip have less than 5000 miles on them

the axle ID tag should read something like 3L73 which would be obviously 3.73
If the truck is 4wd most likely they are 3.73 or 4.10 with towing package
2wd most likely 3.27 or 3.55

Yes the rotations will be 1:3.5 or 1:3.73 or 1:4.1

Also the VIN number or the door sticker will tell you the gear ratio, you can google the info if needed
