Any rifle reloaders on here? .223 rem

Here's what I've got so far.

Ruger MKII all weather .223 (all factory)

Hornady 40gr V-Max
28gr of Winchester 748
CCI small rifle primers
O.A.L. 2.260"

Shoots a good tight 1" group @ 100 but out around 320-350 they get a little crazy. I'm getting close to 8" drop and 2" left (average)with about a 4" group. I have a cheap 3x9 Bushnell- $60 Walmart special for optics. Should I blame this long range "inaccuaracy" on my optics or the round i'm loading? I'm finding it tough to spank the p-dogs at 300+ yrds.

at 300 yds your ft lb per gr drops from 24.18 to 4.98 This is significant and for long ranges your going to experience the tumbling effect.

If you want to carry tighter patterns at the longer distance you need to increase bullet size to carry the energy further.

Try this:

26 gr of 748
70 gr. speer spitzer
velosity app.3000
bc - .214
ft lbs @ 300 yds - 7.04

This will help.

A scope to a gun is like the clutching is to a sled. Bare minimum on a varmint rig should be atleast a 16 power. Plus it takes alittle time to get the scope perfectly centered to the gun, other wise you will always be chasing the left to right from 100-500. Wind will play heavily on a 40 grain bullet out past 200 also. lastly if your shooting large amounts give varget a look as most ball powders are very dirty. I use the regular 50 grain bullets from either win or rem(whoever is the cheapest per 1000) and 26 grains varget seated just touching the lands.

ive had the best luck with 62 gr. bullets, cant remember the charge but my ar's put three out of five through a 2 inch circle at 300 yds gun zeroed at 250 yds

Deffinately upgrade the Optics on my varmint rifle I run a 6-20 Weaver Grand slam and on my big game rifles (long range ones anyway) 5.5-16 Nikon Monarch and 5-15 Bush Elite. Once you experience a good shooting rifle with good optics it's like riding a Dragon compared to a scorpion.

Thanks for the input guy's. I' agree, that’s a pretty light bullet for that distance and I may change in the future. I'm just playing around with
different variables at the moment just for fun. I'm going to do a process
of elimination starting first with the optics.

Anyone ever shoot those moly coat vmax? I have some of those in 50's
I was going to try.

Jim check your online classified, I just picked up a Nikon & Weaver (N.3X9 W Straight 4) for $150.00 both were new in a box.

Mtn_extreme has it right. Look for a bullet that has a higher ballistic coefficient along with a high muzzle velocity that shoots well in your gun. The higher BC allows the bullet to maintain velocity and energy out further.

I recently got away from the Vmax in my .204. I do not have experience with the .223 but the sierras BK 39s shoot much better in my Cooper.

Depends on your barrel bore. If it's on the tight side the moly coat seams to work well. If you go with the moly make sure and clean your barrel every 5 shots or so when shooting dogs and what not. it tends to foul pretty bad but not like regular copper fouling.

Much depends on the twist rate of the rifeling (?) Would take a pretty slow twist to properly stabilize the 40 gr. Most later 223s are twisted for heavier bullets.
Try Fleabay for scopes. Recently bought a couple Nikon Monarch tacticals with mildots in the $340 range.Pretty impressive glass especially in low lite.
With the 55gr.& lighter I prefer BLC2 powder,on p-dogs,skunks,ground squirrels and the like the 50gr James Calhoun bullet is EXPLOSIVE

250ish fer a 4-12 Leupold??? Geez. I think I paid close to 4 bones for my 4x12 leupold back in "91"

I bought my Leupold VX1 4-12 for about $200 last year. (Friends law enforcement discount.) I fit it to my AR-15 with a quick release to got open sights quickly. I also have a Luepold VX3 6.5x20 50mm mounted on a Rem 700 in a 7mmSTW. I think the 4-12 is sufficient for the caliber unless you want to add windage and elevation quick adjust terrents on it. But if your looking for that precesion better fork out the cash for something like a U.S. Optics or Nightforce. (which start out well over a G-Whiz.)
